Looks like this may pass today. No doubt those in office will be eyeing up similar for London before spreading to other cities. Doesn't seem entirely unreasonable to me, but from what I can see the proposed criteria is rubbish.

Paris votes on raising parking fees for SUVs

Most of the arguments on the topic have been done to death, but the outcome of the vote will perhaps be of note.

How does that affect people living in the UK?

Maybe will come here at some point down the line.
My wife’s SUV has a smaller footprint than my Skoda Superb.
It’s a funny old world!

It doesn't except if you have an ICE SuV you intend to drive to and park in Paris.

The new tariff would also apply to electric cars of 2 tonnes and more.
Looks like it'll apply to electric cars too.

And anything Paris do, London will consider and along with that all the copy-cat lefty city councils around the UK.

You obviously didn’t read it, it’s a tax on weight. 1600kg for ICE 2000kg for BEV.

It's a tax on large heavy cars, but calling it an SUV charge makes for better headlines.

That's quite low for ICE, BMW 4series type mass.

Tesla 3 is 1700kg and BMW i3 1400kg.

Maybe it's not a bad thing to restrict large cars from our cities.

1600kg is all but the lowest spec new Corsa.
Can’t be that many new cars this tax doesn’t apply to!

Plenty of cars on sale below 1600kg thankfully, even a 7 seat Dacia Jogger comes in comfortably below that.

My 73 plate Peugeot 3008 is under 1400kgs. Most C segment cars are way under 1600kg. You’d only have to worry D segment and above mainly.

I think it’s a good idea, there needs to be some sort of push back against cars getting bigger and bigger as a generational ‘improvement’.

So, as discussed on another thread, not an 'SUV' tax, but a charge that will affect some SUV...SUV charge is a MUCH better headline though

Seems to be quite a few exemptions.

If you live or work in Paris, are a tradesman or taxi driver or a health worker or have a disability then you are exempt. Seems it’s only for visitors to the city and Paris being much like London with ancient thoroughfares and far too much traffic for the available road space, it may encourage visitors to dump the car on the outskirts and use its excellent public transport instead.

Affects EVs over two tonnes as well.

Is the weight based on the MIRO as shown on the V5? I’ve seen various figures for my car but I’m assuming the V5 figure would what it would be assessed against.

The quicker weight based tax is brought in, here and everywhere else, the better imo. Hopefully forcing manufacturers to compete to make lighter cars.
Well done France.
