my oh just had a renewal from green flag come through for £190 for the year, was £80 last year, so went on the web and found the same cover from the same cover for £60 ish from the same company, so rang them, they couldnt match it, so canceled and got cover from someone else out of principle.
Shes been a customer for years, just seems wrong that they cant even match the same service from a comparison site for a long standing customer.

Although no different to insurance, mobile telephone contracts, Sky television, etc.

If everyone shopped around then they not do it.

There are rules since jan 2022 that renewals for home and car insurance can’t be higher than equivalent new customer. Doesn’t help other subscriptions though and you’re right, always shop around regardless.

On the subject of breakdown cover; is Autoaid still good?

I use Autoaid. Still very reasonable. Cannot comment on the service yet as not had a breakdown for ten years..... Despite knocking around in older cars.

We use AA linked to a bank current account. Think the fee is about £12/mth. Also includes travel insurance and mobile phone insurance, both of which we use, so works out as quite a good deal. AA have been great when I needed them (thanks to a MASSIVE pothole) and the phone insurance paid immediately for a new screen when I dropped my phone - just a phone call to them saw the money in my account, didn’t even need any evidence or receipt for work done, which surprised me.

I do similarly. The AA covers any vehicle me or my wife is in, and includes at home breakdown. (They jump started my Pug for me and switched a punctured tyre). My cover also includes loss / damage / fraud on any debit, credit or charge / loyalty card.

I work on the basis that I'd pay the yearly amount for travel insurance alone, so the AA, phone, card cover is basically free.

Currently with them but running older cars if needed there's going to be a surcharge, this despite many years of custom without a single call out.
I preferred when it was a pay at the time and claim back service, those who might shall we say take advantage would be wary of running large recovery bills up in case rejected, claim back service i am sure encouraged people to mitigate losses and everyone wins.
I wrote to them at the time pointing this out but never received a reply.

Looking elsewhere this year.

Same here - used them twice a few years ago but not for ages, but just having cover that doesn't change price every 5 minutes is worth a small premium over the cheapest of the usual big 3 providers imho. I think cover for my wife and I is £76/year.

We use AutoAid - had a breakdown last month and a flatbed turned up and took us straight to a garage of my choice within a couple of hours which I thought was decent enough.
