We've just had average speed cameras installed on a long residential stretch near my workplace and it got my little brain thinking - what if there was 100% speed camera coverage in the UK? Not the average speed kind, but the standard type.

Would the "sports" car market in the UK die? How much fun can be had whilst staying under the limit?

Sports cars which major on driver feedback rather than going fast are fun at any speed.

Would depend on what the limits are, obviously. Plenty of national speed limit roads are fun in sport cars.

The way you’d do this isn’t via cameras, btw. You’d make telematics mandatory, and then plumb the telematics data into the speeding fine infrastructure. Obviously there would be political obstacles to doing that.

First question - probably not - people buy sports cars for all sorts of reasons, not just necessarily to go fast and break speed limits.

Second question - loads! If in doubt come to the Highlands, lots of roads that will test your mettle and your metal, at well under 60mph. Perfect for an MX-5 f'rinstance.

But plenty do, or have done. The Elise in its original form was like the MX5/MR2. Not that fast but great to drive. The GT86 falls into the same category as does the new GR86, despite being faster.

More manufacturers should do it as speed isn't the 'be all'. IMHO carrying more speed in/out of a corner is much more fun and that's generally when the chassis/feedback is most important and the engine less so.

Each to their own obviously, but I'd rather a slower car, which has been set up well than vice versa.

Finally time for the UK to embrace the Kei car. Small size with modest power. Focus on the chassis, not the powertrain.
