Skoda confirms UK prices for new Superb

Flagship combustion model and PH favourite starts at £34k - or £36k for the even roomier wagon

You’ll likely recall that PH is a big fan of the Superb - the estate especially. Most car people are. It started life as an exceptionally large and very affordable model that was conspicuous for doing what it said on the tin. It did without the airs and graces that a premium German manufacturer would deem necessary in a flagship, yet it was capable of fitting in virtually everywhere. It looked like a sage choice whether you were a barrister or barista. And if you bought the punchiest one, it was pretty nippy too.

The recently revealed fourth-generation model has continued the established trend - the wagon is 40mm longer than its predecessor despite sharing the same wheelbase, and luggage capacity has increased to 690 litres. Elsewhere Skoda has tweaked the exterior design for effect and while there is the inevitable 13-inch touchscreen installed inside, it is flanked by physical switchgear that is apparently the result of customer feedback. Fancy that. You still get a familiar engine lineup to choose from too: starting with the 1.5-litre TSI that can be had as a plug-in hybrid and extending to a choice of 2.0-litre petrol and diesel units.

Naturally it’s the chunkiest one we’re interested in, the now 265hp derivative carrying the Superb 280 torch. While its output has been repeatedly nibbled away by emission standards, the range-topping version does still come with 295lb ft of torque and standard-fit all-wheel drive, so it’s safe to assume it remains a sub-6-second-to-62mph car. Alternatively, you can still have a 2.0-litre diesel with the same peak twist figure (albeit with 193hp) which ought to make the most expensive oil burner a fairly brisk prospect too.

Precisely how expensive we can’t say for sure yet because the Skoda hasn’t broken the prices down by engine variant - but the three-trim lineup (no Sportline, sadly) starts at £34,865 for a hatch and £36,165 for the wagon. That’s for the SE Technology; the SE L (typically the one to go for) adds 18-inch wheels, nicer trim materials, upgraded seats and the button-operated boot with the new electric sliding parcel shelf for £38,220 and £39,520, respectively. Or you can still go the whole hog with a chintzy Laurin & Klement from £46,100 and £47,400. In terms of starting price, you’re looking at around a 10 per cent hike on the outgoing Superb, which is now only available from current stock. Skoda says its replacement can be ordered now with first deliveries expected in June.

As an owner of a 2016 Superb 280 estate, I should like this. It's a subtle evolution of the same thing, but it seems to have lost a little in the platform sharing with the Passat. The rear in particular looks very... bland.

Having said that it does look extremely sensible, which I suppose is the point.

I'm really hoping they'll do a Skoda version of the ID7, as that would make a great daily.

Another solid iteration of a very good car.

That rear end does look pretty Vauxhall though.

Shame they don't do a quick one. I love a Superb, even going back to the old PD130, but it's crying out for the 450bhp lump from the RS4.

This should be a great car across all levels and trim variants. My last two work cars have been two different '68 plate 280 estates and I'm now in a '73 plate 280. They're absolutely excellent, offering a real breadth of talent.

I have a 2018 hatch 280 and must admit this new one does nothing for me, not sure why. Maybe it's the fact it looks like a rebadged Passat rather than it's own model.

Plus 280hp is just about acceptable in mine, 265hp in what I'm sure is a heavier car isn't really enough.

Completely different platforms, Superb is MQB Evo with transverse engines whilst the RS4 is an MLB platform with longitudinal engine layout.

Anybody else looking at this new Superb and thinking Volvo V60

In a market where a petrol Corsa is £30k or a VW Golf is £35k, and a Tiguan is £40k

this is brilliant value! £38-40k for a car thats more spacious and well thought-out (physical knobs!) than cars an entire price range above while still having a high quality interior and solid engines.

if you need a 5 seat family car, im genuinely serious, but why would you want anything else?

We've a 2019 272 Hatch and I have to agree on the looks. It's lost something - it lacks a crispness that was in the Mk3 lineup

Looks like they designed an instrument housing then thought fk it and shoe-horned a screen in there. Looks awful. Like the car though.

Always been a fan of the Superb, but not sure about this one, seems to have a bit of everything in the styling. It's not particularly cohesive.

this looks very much like more of the same from Skoda. great stuff.

You won't be able to buy a new V60 when this comes out though, with Volvo dropping their estate line to concentrate on SUVs. Plus, comparing the V60/V90 B6 to the Superb 280, the Superb is just a better drive any day of the week.

I looked at all the options from Volvo before buying a 2019 Superb estate. The superb is closer to the V90 in size, in fact has a bigger boot and more rear legroom, whilst being considerably cheaper to buy. I prefer the V60 and V90 to look at, however cost & space were my main priority and the Superb was unbeatable in that regard.

Not sure I'd agree with that last statement at all. The Superb is typically VAG in its handling - it's a wallowy pudding that likes to crash over bumps. It never ceases to amaze me that VW group are still incapable of speccing decent dampers and springs.

The V60, by contrast, handles absolutely fine, with much less roll and far more refine bump absorption.

Holy mother of god. It has heater knobs. And you can buy it with a, how do you say it, a engine? Woah this is weird. Some sort of time loop?

I do hope that the new Superb drives as well as my 2014 model on sensible wheels.
It’s the ideal setup, very smooth & quiet on our appaling road surfaces.

That instrument 'cluster' is hilarious. How on earth did that get signed off - a thick-rimmed square screen crammed into ovoid cowl.
