Big in Japan: BMW M3 MT Final Edition lands

To celebrate the last manual M3, a RHD version will be offered to the JDM. It might need a lottery to distribute

Despite recent protestations to the contrary, the end is inevitably close at hand for manual gearboxes in BMWs. The presence of a clutch pedal in the current M3 and M4 already seems like something of a misnomer (not least because you can’t buy one here) and while demand is said to be punchy enough for it to continue for the moment - and even expand to the Z4 M40i later this year - almost everything it does has a sense of finality about it.

Case in point, the M3 MT Final Edition just launched in Japan. Limited to just 150 units for the JDM exclusively, the press release is emphatic enough: this will be the last M3 equipped with a manual transmission sold in the country. Which, again, has precious little to do with demand - BMW makes it clear that if ‘orders exceeds the limited number, the winner will be determined by a strict lottery by the end of May this year.’ Given the JDM’s preference for novelty and long-running nameplates (incredibly the 2025MY Nissan GT-R has just been revealed there today, too) that prospect seems likely.

Especially as the Final Edition, which is based, we think, on a rear-drive Competition spec, looks the part with standard fit matte gold 827 M style wheels. Beyond the presence of three pedals, the limited edition model is also said to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the M3’s first victory as a German touring car. Three colours are available: Alpine White, Black Sapphire and Brooklyn Grey - each capped at 50 units. Prices start at 14,200,000 yen or around £75,000.

Interestingly, the release suggests that a manual M3 was not previously available in the Japanese lineup, which obviously makes it an even more enticing proposition for the nation’s M car fanatics. Of course, the fact that BMW actually builds a right-hand-drive M3 probably isn’t going to lead to a last-gasp introduction of anything like the Final Edition in the UK (despite the imminent arrival of the Z4, that ship appears to have sailed) but given the well-established conduit of imported JDM cars, don’t be surprised if one or two examples eventually turn up on these shores. Especially given the premium that could be judiciously applied straight off the boat. We’d take ours in Black Sapphire.

The joy of marketing where as the reality is the 'market' sees the manual M3s as something of less value - me? I loved my manual F10 M3 comp as a driver, but not so much when it came to moving it on..

F10 M3 isn't a model. F10 M5 is....?

Given the press photos, are you sure they aren't selling this as LHD in Japan?

European cars have been sold in Japan as LHD for years, with some buyers finding it prestigious to have a LHD car (as it's rare).

Probably a great car BUT i cannot get used the very ugly front end and the lazy dash design with a huge television in the middle.

I've had a quick look on BMW Japan's website...

BMW Japan's website states 480 hp [353kW] & 550Nm - so non-Competition. It is RWD.

Correct - they get the Competition (hence Auto), currently in X Drive guise.

No mention of LHD. They also show it with German numberplates! They're just press shots.

The website also says if one colour sells out, they may suggest another for you. But the application form is pretty detailed, so it looks like whilst it may be a lottery, it may not be be a random one! One application and one colour choice per applicant.

Yes, I was just curious whether you meant M3 or M5, because they did a manual M5 in some markets smile

Is it wrong that I'd be happy enough with the auto in one of these. They weigh around 1800kg as it is, so to me I'm not sure if a manual really suits their remit. However...I guess they are a modern day manual E39 M5 in many ways though in fairness.

If it’s imported into Japan then surely it’s not domestic market and just plain JM?

A shame that BMW couldn't bring the very last manual M3 to the UK market, before we're all herded down the electric nirvana by our net-zero overlords!

I couldn't agree more. thumbup

And why did the US have a manual option for the E60 M5, but we didn't? banghead

AFAIK the manual gearbox can’t cope with the torque of the competition engine so all G8X manuals are non comps

Because in America; manual = sportscar, automatic = every-day grocery-getter. It's similar with fuel, petrol = ordinary, diesel is for hard core proper working vehicles, you see pick up trucks with diesel badges displayed as prominantly as a V8 badge would be over here (at leats that used to be the case, not sure if it still is). The manual thing doesn't apply so much here (if anything in the UK manual is normal and auto is for luxury cars, though not so much now) so there isn't the kudos of a manual so very few new buyers choose one. Manual may be more popular for enthusiasts buying second hand, but not for people buying them new.

Valid point. I remember that most of the German brand cars that I saw when I was over there were in fact left hand drive, including the Maybach that I rode in the back of.
