Cancelling Tax Direct debit

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I did a quick search and couldn't find an answer to my specific question and also .gov wasn't completely clear.
My car is taxed until October 24, but i have received a reminder that a direct debit payment will be taken out on 4th April 24.
I therefore assume that i have paid for 12 months tax, but opted to pay for it over two instalments by direct debit. I honestly don't remeber doing tjis, but that's probably just old age. I do remember having it monthly on DD at some point, but must have changed it.
It appears that you pay a 5% surcharge by paying it by DD. Don't know if this was a thing when i signed up, or i just didn't realise as i hate paying more for things than i have to.
What would be the easiest way to stop this payment coming out and then just paying for the tax manually? Could i cancel DD, or is it too late now that it is taxed for another 6 months? I assume i could sorn and then re-tax, but not sure if this would be more cost effective anyway.

Cancel your DD now. Car is still taxed to the end of the month. On 1st April, retax it with your choice of payment option.

I have just gone to look at this again now and i have realised that my car is actually taxed for 12 months, but was payable in two 6 monthly instalments, so i have 6 months tax left on the car.
I have already cancelled the direct debit without realising, so when I have gone to tax the car on the dvla site it says that it is already taxed.
It says that if the payment fails twice then they will contact me to make the payment manually.
Is this the only option that i have now that i have cancelled the DD?
If the DD fails then will this have any impact on my credit rating?
