BMW 340i (F30) manual | Spotted

Six cylinders and six gears are rare enough, but this 340i also has 460hp...

It’s exciting to have a straight-six, six-speed sports car back from BMW in the form of the Z4 Handschalter Pack. With its old-school powertrain and colour combo, it’ll likely be a hit with purists. But, truthfully, BMW’s sports cars have never quite hit the spot; all the best straight-six, manual cars with the blue and white roundel have had a fixed roof.

Whether it’s something rare groove like a Z4 3.0 Si, a cult classic like the 1M or a hand-built hero like the E34 M5, there are all manner of cars out there that show off BMW’s expertise very well indeed. Even with far from the best manual gearboxes ever made, there’s something about the more direct connection with a great engine offered by a stick and a third pedal that makes them very desirable. An auto just isn’t the same, as used values for equivalents will attest to.

In recent model generations, however, the case for the manual has become harder and harder to make. With the advent of dual-clutch transmissions for M cars and the very good ZF 8HP for the mainstream stuff, the six-speeds became slower and less efficient; you had to really want a manual gearbox to put up with one. In which case, older cars must be on the radar as well. The new BMWs were being designed with the autos in mind, because that’s what people wanted, and it showed.

Which all serves to make this 2016 340i even more interesting than most. Just imagine the selling dealer’s face when the first owner wanted white paint, oyster leather and a manual gearbox for their top-of-the-range 3 Series. It would be amazing to find another F30 like this one; on PH it’s currently the only six-cylinder petrol model of this generation with a clutch pedal. Equivalent M3s are just as rare, if not more so; being so seldom seen and almost forbidden because of how dominant autos became only increases the intrigue.

Somebody knew what they were doing here, for sure. In addition to the manual gearbox, this one also benefits from an M Performance exhaust and an ECU tickle from DMS, meaning 460hp. Or more power than an M3 Competition of the period. Next stop for the ultimate Q car F30 would surely be a limited-slip diff, then you could really get to work on the famously tuneable B58 3.0-litre…

We’re getting ahead of ourselves. It’s going to make a lovely thing as is, because the power is ample, the gearbox cool and the sound likely to be superb. This hasn’t been some high mileage hack, either, showing just 38k since new and with a full BMW service history to back it up. New pads have just gone on, too. Somebody (or perhaps a few people) have loved it, which makes sense because this is the sort of spec you’d really have to seek out - everybody else would be more than happy with the auto. No doubt it’ll find its next home with another BMW aficionado. The £23k asking price looks fair given what similar, standard cars are going for, and getting your manual B58 fix this way is surely cooler than in an M140i. Or, dare it be said, in a Z4 either…

If I remember correctly you couldn't get a manual in the 440i. So these have always really appealed to me a lot. A good find I reckon.

Judging by the steering wheel and dear lever it’s probably been clocked vs the 38k advertised mileage.

Great to see a manual though. Always wanted to try a turbo BMW manual like this as thought you could drive around the lag better and enjoy the low down torque in the longer gears

I'm torn on this one. I've got a 340i Touring with ZF box and it is really the perfect combo. The manual isn't the best box. But fair play to the person that specced this car - I'd have mine in manual if that has been an option for the Touring.

Also - 460bhp with no LSD is a waste of time. Mine is 430bhp with a torsen diff, without the diff mine would be a disaster, traction wise.

Finally, these need suspension upgrades from standard to be a good drivers car. The Birds suspension upgrades transformed mine - the standard M Sport suspension is standard M-lite crashy, over sprung and under damped.

I like oyster leather but it needs to be with a dark paint; it’s horrible with white.

I’d be intrigued to try the B58 with a manual gearbox though; on paper the ZF8 is an absolute no brainer but in my M140i it just ended up lacking a certain something. Very effective, but I think I’m just a dinosaur who likes manual gearboxes.

The steering wheel is shiny but the leather of this era BMW seems to wear horribly.

Same mileage as our BMW to the thou, I'd say it's only the steering wheel that belies the distance on ours too (no gearstick) so while I'm not guarantying it hasn't been clocked it only looks as bad as our genuine mileage example.

99% of people tell me my manual 140 is crap and the auto is quicker, more efficient.

I don't care smile

The box, Birds suspension and diff and a "stage 2+" tickle make me smile (almost) every time I drive it.

Mileage gone up to 43k now.

No mention of an uprated clutch or torque figures with the barrymod?

Not available as a touring, sadly. And FWIW BMW manuals are fine. Only issue is short gearing in 6th compared to ZF8

The wheels don't fair well, my f32 on 50k has a very similar looking steering wheel.

I had a f31 335i touring manual and I had so many time wasters when I came to sell it. Lots of people think they want a manual, but very people who actually buy them do.

Love the manual bit, but I couldn't live with the light interior and white paintwork.

You definitely can get a manual 440i. There’s absolutely no way I’d have the manual over the ZF8 though.

They have a massive forecourt, they probably did 5k just moving it around. biglaugh

Buy at own risk as usual, even from a dealer these days unfortunately.

I didn't realise the B58 in the 3 series is only the same power as the outgoing N55? In the the 140i it's 335bhp (nearer to 350 in reality). I drove a manual 140i when looking for one but it wasn't a patch on the auto, IMHO of course. I haven't gone for an LSD yet because I was brought up on rwd open diff cars and find it very easy to modulate the power with my LSD equivalent right foot under any road conditions! Of course I fully understand that the fwd generation wouldn't know what power oversteer is if it smacked them around the back of the head. But each to their own. As for the standard brakes, again I find anticipation of traffic and road conditions a great benefit in slowing the car safely and effectively. In this case the car in question looks like it was specced by the local constabulary, with a little battenburg applied it could be any old road policing car.

Did BMW manuals of this era have clutch delay valves and additional return springs etc?

If so, getting rid of those gubbins and refreshing the linkage mechanism always improves the manual experience.

Intresting car. I would change the seats out and upgrade the suspension a little though.

There is definitely that argument for sure, and the BMW manuals I've had have been more miss than hit to be fair.
