I’ve gone to tax a car today which I’m picking up tonight 30.03.24, so same day. It only offers to tax it from 01/04/24, which is fine as it gives an extra month, but as the annual tax is so low it doesn’t really matter. Is it okay to drive it tonight? It just won’t allow me to change the date to 30.0424.

No you can't.

Driving without tax is only allowed if going to/from a pre booked MOT, your insurance can be invalid without car tax.

Thinking about this, maybe I didn’t read it properly and it said taxed from 01.03.24, which would make more sense. Hopefully it will update soon to check the status.

Insurance isn’t valid if un-taxed is the kind of smarmy crappy small print that insurance companies use to justify weaseling out of any claim.

It’s a common small print requirement that a car must be taxed & road legal.

You are still insured even if car is not taxed.

That’s why your comment is wrong or boll@x

If you stop being a dick on the internet & actually;

a) read my post.
b) realise I was agreeing with you.
c) realise that I wasn’t the person you think you are replying to.

The world would be a happier place.

I've been buying car insurance for just under 30 years now, usually for 3 or 4 vehicles a year for the last decade, I read every clause of the small print before I sign, and I've had insurance with most insurers at some point or another in the last 30 years.

I've never had tax being a requirement for insurance to be valid as in any of the policies, almost certainly because until recently the law made that requirement an impossibility - you couldn't tax a car without insurance in place, which, by definition, meant that the insurance must've been valid for a period, even if only minutes or hours, before the car could be taxed. Hence, policies could not exclude cover during that period.

Although you now only need an MOT to tax a car and not an insurance policy, I still haven't seen a change in any of the T&Cs of the insurance policies I've taken out.

I imagine that because February usually has only 28 days, you cannot tax on the 30/31/29 of any month, in case you or others want to make it monthly in the future. That is my understanding.

My e46 has been sorned for the last 6 months
Went online today and had the option to either tax from 1/3/24 or from 1/04/24
Same price as last year, don't know what the new rate is but probably cheaper
Thanks for the information everyone, probably saved a few quid
And yes, did not take it out for a spin today
Thanks

The off duty police officer who crashed into me whilst on a mobile phones insurance paid out, even though his vehicle was untaxed (18 days expired)

Also of note no charges were brought to him, as apparently it's a civil matter not a police one, which I suspect may have been a different story had the whole incident been the other way round with the member of public having no tax. But who knows

If it was the other way around you'd be locked up forever or on death row lol
