Named driver crash my car - I have no details of what happen

I am the main policyholder on a car and I Also had a name driver on my policy. Over the weekend I received a call from the police to say that they found my vehicle crashed and that it was at the police pound and I needed to recover it. He said he couldn’t give me any information or even tell me if the name driver is okay or where he is. I arranged for the car to be collected. It’s completely damaged and looks like a total write of. I managed to find that the driver was arrested and remanded in jail. Again, no one‘s given much information about what actually happened. However I did manage to find out that the only driving charge is reckless driving and he didn’t hit anyone (not sure what that mean as surely you would have hit something). I don’t have no information and I don’t have any ways yet if contacting the named driver. My question is what do I tell my Insurance? They are going to want to speak with him but his in jail right now. I don’t know when it happened, the time, where it happened, what happened!!! I’m so worried as the car still in finance.

How is the named driver related to you.

Not sure it's that relevant, but you do risk an accusation of front in my humble opinion.

surely rather than asking us, you phone up the insurer's claims like and tell them what you know and agree next steps?

You need to demand that you are informed who was driving. Failing that, take the policy which shows the named driver, and ask if it was that person. You have a right to know that for insurance purposes, IMO.

Hitting someone is very different to hitting something.

Phone your insurer.

I’m confused by what you’ve written. So it was the named driver on your policy that crashed or not? And can’t u just call the named driver (presumably you actually know them!).

Yes I will be phoning them but thought I had to give them all the information which I have none. This is all new to me and that why i seeked advise

I know who the driver was but I just don’t know what happened.

I mean as soon as there's a claim, the insurance company are going to look carefully at whether the named driver was really the main driver. They will dig until they decide that they don't want to pay.

So you have no way to contact the driver and no information but later on you say he is your brother. So you know who the driver is.

Yes the named driver was on my policy and he crashed the car. I can’t call him because he was in the sent to jail.

I had a fairly big crash in my youth which involved several charges being brought against me and several hours of police interviews. I was never locked up, why would someone just be locked up for reckless? Are you sure you have the whole story?

Yes my brother is the named driver. I can’t contact him because he is in jail. You can’t ring up and ask to speak to inmates.

They have been pretty clear from the start that they don't have the whole story, to be fair.

He wasn't locked up for the crash. He was on probation (for another matter) and was recalled back to prison. If you are on probation, any kind of arrest can get you locked up. That is the reason why I can’t not speak with him and get the whole story from him

Does the insurance company know he was out on probation?

What are the chances he was running from the police at the time? They seem to have caught up with him rather quickly after the crash.
