Various topics have been covered over the years as to what new engines people would to transplant in old cars, but what about the inverse? What about old engines in new cars?

To kick off, I’d love to see a rover v8 in a discovery 4 - perhaps a late 4.6 when they just about had acceptable power levels. I think the woofly laziness would suit a discovery 4.

Another one would be either the Yamaha 4.4 v8 or the 3.2 Volvo 6 in the latest S90 - an otherwise great looking executive car saddled with 4 banger donkey engines.

Anything that used to be a naturally aspired engine, that's now downsized to a turbocharged 4cyl.

A naturally aspirated bmw straight six in any modern bmw.
A naturally aspirated v8 in any modern Mercedes.
A naturally aspirated v10 in... anything!

I’d love to see an A110 with a 3.4 flat 6 from the 981.

And an Emira with an AMG 4.0 V8.

I couldn't agree more. thumbup

My 330i is old (2005) so it has an N/A straight 6, which is largely why I still have it. But it would be better with an S54 engine! Although there is always the S65 version. laugh

N/A V10 - yes please!

Neither of which would fit in the engine bay of either car.

I'd love to see a V12 in the engine bay of an Elise but it's not going to happen short of someone inventing TARDIS packaging.

I'd like to see the 4.4 Yamaha V8 in either the V70 or V90.

The wankel engine from the Mazda RX-8 into the current MX-5.

The Afla Romeo 3.2L V6 'Busso' engine from the 146 GTA into the current Giulia.

A lovely thought experiment that I have often had too!

Most modern engines are excellent at what they do, just so soulless and without the drama that makes you feel like you are going fast. So having all the convenience of a modern car with the power train of something interesting is quite a lovely thought.

I have seen a few engine swaps using the S85 V10, including into a TVR, but I have wondered if putting the V10, mated to a DCT (not ZF8), would make the current Z4 a more interesting proposition. The M6 or M8 are too heavy for it and need the turbo V8, but a 500hp small Z4 would do nicely. A Z4 GTS.

Wow, that would probably be candidate for the most fuel inefficient vehicle ever - given that engine would regularly give <10mpg in a P38, dread to think what it would give having to haul about another 700+kg of Disco!

Or make it longer, like Hennessy did for the venom.

I don’t think anything in this thread is a serious design proposal!

You’d not think you’d get a Viper V10 in a motorcycle but someone did it.

You can get a V8, flat six, flat 4 or straight 4 into a Boxster.

Air cooled 911 engine in a Boxster / Cayman of any generation, but particularly the 986 for Boxster.

3.2 Straight 6 from the E46 M3 in a 1 or 2 Series.

Anything with a decent amount of power and torque in a MX-5

Ever so slightly off topic but I’ve always wondered that because the Disco 3/4 and first gen Range Rover Sport share the same chassis underneath, if you could body swap a Disco 4 onto the RRS 5.0 SC chassis and running gear.

Then you’d get the big, practical, and timeless Discovery shape, but with the socking great big V8 instead of a cam-snapping, sooty, rattly diesel.
