All things being the same (mileage per year, value of cars, address etc), why would a 2017 Merc GLC 350D be significantly more expensive to insure than a 2007 Aston Vantage or a 997 911?

I can't seem to make sense of why that would be.

My Mercedes E350 estate is more expensive to insure than my Porsche 996.
I can only guess that statistically the Mercedes is more likely to be in a situation to make a claim than the Porsche, no idea if that is correct.

Would that affect 7 year boring old diesels though? Range Rovers etc I can understand.

More expensive with every Insurer or just the ones you have tried via a comparison site ?
However it will be down to theft and damage statistics for the car itself and then after the applicable Actuaries have had a go at building their various computer rating models.

There's a lot more data that goes into determining risk (and hence cost to insure) than just those three. A handful of other things they might consider...

- Are people who drive Aston's and Porsches more likely to have accidents?
- Are those accidents likely to be more serious (high performance cars, fewer safety features, etc)?
- Are the cars more likely to be stolen?
- Are the cars going to cost more to repair and are parts readily available or will the car be off the road for longer?
- Do they want your custom, or will they price high to deter you?

Makes sense, a Merc SUV is more likely to be pottering around during rush hour, parked in the supermarket, parked on the street, driven around with the driver distracted by noisy children in the back, etc. whereas an Aston/Porsche is more likely to be saved for nice weekend drives and parked in a nice safe area.

This was on a comparison site.

Makes sense I guess.

Either way, I'm pleasantly surprised.

Having recently paid myself for some cosmetic bits and bobs following a disagreement over right of way with a muntjac, Mercedes parts prices are higher than Porsche.

A handful of grille trim bits for my CLS was £600, before fitting.
