There is NO such thing as a "4D" number plate. They are 3D.

I use them as a guide as to which drivers to give a very wide berth to. 4D plate (especially on an old Audi or Range Rover) = weapon grade bell end.

I saw pink "4D" lettering on a plate the other day. How? Why?

I'm actually of the mind that anything that makes a plate more memorable isn't necessarily a bad thing. Dodgy spacing to make words, weird 3 dimensional letters that catch the eye and even strange colours. I barely remember my own plates, let alone any I see on other vehicles, but I do when they're out of the ordinary, especially if the spacing is tortured to make a word of some sort.

3D plates were the ones that actually had plastic letters and numbers in 3 dimensions on metal plates. Then came acrylic plates that were able to mimic these plates by shading one side of the letters and numbers to look like they were 3 dimensional, but were actually only 2 dimensions.

4D plates was the name given to these kids fridge magnet style plates to differentiate them from rhe original 3D. There is no fourth dimension in this case.

Time is widely regarded as the 4th dimension so by that metric my 2D plates existing over a period of time are actually 3D!
