Today I got an insurance quote for my mum for a 2013 Range Rover Vogue of £1500.00. My mum is retired, 4 years no claims and car valued about £20k with Admiral. I was quoted £1500.00 for 2007 Mercedes s500 with 9 years no claims but 6 points. What has happened with insurance prices? I want to buy a new car because of ULEZ but no I am concerned about insurance quotes when I never gave them a second thought.

Try Swinton, that's who I ended up with after getting a ridiculous renewal quote for mine.

Do they burst their banks?

Apologies, Friday evening, wine o’clock, couldn’t resist.

£1500 seems cheap for a Range Rover.

Being retired can also be a higher risk.

A fair point, well-made.

Seems reasonable bearing in mind my son is 18 and pays £1800 for a 1litre car worth £2k.

Guess it’s subsidising folks driving cars costing tens of thousands.

I just re-insured my sales guys Evoque, fully comp SDP & business driving 2 other named drivers, 10,000m p.a

Last year 575, this year the comparison sites were quoting 1.5k to 2.2k p.a !

My broker got it down to 992.

Mine went up by 75 quid which was a relief.

Nope, it's your son's insurance that's being subsidised. Insurers rarely make money on young driver insurance, and the losses are bailed out by the premiums of other policyholders.

The value of £2K will have no effect on the size of the claim made by the person he hits.

Teenage males are considered one of the highest risk driver segments, regardless of the car they drive, given that segment of drivers are involved in a disproportionate number of collisions.

Maybe your mum has also crossed some kind of age threshold which also makes her higher risk = more expensive

L405 Range Rover didn't even make it into the top ten of most stolen cars last year.

The total number stolen isn’t the important statistic, it’s the fraction of them stolen which matters.
