Private Plates

Hi.
Purchased an used car and previous owner gave his private plate and entitlement certicate. I have the new V5 for this reg showing my details.
Question I have - I have my own private plate on retention and want to assign to this car. What will happen to the current private plate when I assign my plate to the car. I'd like to sell the previous plate, but guessing I need to pay retention fee before assigning my plate.
Is there a way to assign my new plate and sell the current plate without paying the fee?

I’ve got a few plates I move around and some on retention and have recently sold another couple. There is ALWAYS a fee one way or another. It’s on £80 from memory though to put it on retention then you can sell it on.

Gotta pay your £80 to take the existing plate off which will then generate a certificate of entitlement, you can then sell or do whatever you chose with it.
Putting your own plate on, which you have currently on retention won't cost you anything further happily.

It must be 20 years ago when I bought a private plate, and I'm sure the fee included at the time (the plate was bought from the DVLA, not a dealer) was £80 then. I'm amazed it's never gone up.

I wonder if it's because they're more common now.
