Morgan reveals Super 3 Origins special editions

Nine themes, nine examples each, all celebrating the Super 3's design inspirations in style

Part of the joy of a car like the Morgan Super 3 is the customisation on offer. Choosing exactly the paint colour you want, for every element of the car, opting for decals, adding luggage and personalising upholstery to make just the Morgan you want, will be a hugely rewarding experience. Anything is possible with a Super 3 and everything is seemingly encouraged; after all, have you seen one yet that doesn’t look absolutely brilliant?

To really prove the point, and celebrate all the design inspirations that went into the new three-wheeled Morgan, a special series called the Super 3 Origins has been launched. It isn’t just a single spec limited edition, either - oh no. There will be nine different configurations to choose from, each with their own paint, interior, features and accessories.

There will be just nine examples of each of the nine themes, so 81 examples in total. ‘Super 3 Origins displays an eclectic and versatile mix of commissions… Inspirations range from the emergence of the jet age, the space race, the pop art movement, America boulevard cruisers, belly tank racers, '80s tech and science fiction’, reads the press release. It’ll be hard to know which to choose.

The nine Origins cars are Bluebird, Boulevard Cruiser, Pickersleigh Speedshop, Space Race, Warp Speed, Scramble the Jets, Charlie Mike, Fast Forward and Whoosh Bang Pop. As you can see, they’re all pretty fantastic, from the aviation theme of Scramble the Jets to the overlander-style Charlie Mike. It’s going to be a tough buying decision, that’s for sure. Specific aspects highlighted by Morgan include paint matched exactly to Donald Campbell’s land speed record Bluebird, the hand-painted Pickersleigh Speedshop livery, polished aluminium contrasted with yellow on the Warp Speed, a red ‘bomb release’ start switch for Scramble the Jets, white wheels for Fast Forward, and a Morgan comic strip for Whoosh Bang Pop. All pretty great in their own way, even with just renders to see.

Morgan’s Chief Design Officer Jonathan Wells said of the Origins cars: “The Super 3’s aesthetic is derived from its mechanical function and the very broad outlook adopted by the creative team at Morgan. We drew inspiration from the other industries, artistic and industrial movements, and sampled the ‘best bits’ from multiple decades of design.”

All nine new Super 3s are available to order now, each sold with a bespoke artwork. The price is the same for all - from £47,995 - and a Campbell-inspired Bluebird commission will be on Morgan’s stand for this weekend’s Festival of Speed. One more car to check off the must-see list!

Freddie Flintoff would argue otherwise.

Personally I’d rather be a passenger in Wallace & Grommits sidecar.
Many years ago my dad helps his friend rebuild a very early example with a JAP engine.
He loved it but then again it was a car more of his time than mine, he couldn’t understand my RS500 Cosworth…

maybe owners can buy a matching helmet.

Those roll hoops are pretty much cosmetic.

Maybe he should have put a helmet on considering the manner he was driving on a track. Doesn't take a genius to know that would have been a pretty good idea.

I have to say I think most of these look awful. The blue one is OK.

I would rather choose my own colour scheme thank you.

Special editions for those who can't be bothered or lack the imagination to spec up their own car...

The flintoff addition has a misshapen nose cone and paint chipped body work one assumes.

Basically a car that is dangerous just does not appeal

Why not make a usable on with a canopy instead of something that really isn't suited to use in uk I'm sure nice climates abroad will appreciate it more though .

I don't get the attraction at all. 3 wheels are a stupid solution looking for a problem. 50 grand? Lol

All cars are dangerous.

How far do you want to take this line of reasoning?
Exactly. And, continuing down that line of reasoning, older car designs are far more dangerous than newer ones yet that doesn't stop people from wanting vintage cars...

The enclosed tub doesn't really lend itself to having a useable canopy - I agree with your sentiment though.
The wife and I really considered buying one for a European trip we had planned - we visited the dealer, had a good look over it and discussed options.

There were a number of things that put us off it though...

Lack of weather protection - not so much from the rain, but there would be no escaping the heat; we really didn't fancy cooking in the enclosed tub.
They're really wide! (about 5" wider than my Mazda MX-5.)
Tyres - these 20" Avons are specially made for Morgan and at the time of looking were only available from a dealer - there is no alternative manufacturer/fitment. With the vehicle being so wide, I was concerned that on a narrow road if we hit a pothole/debris and damaged the tyre we could be stuck in the middle of rural Spain with no easy fix. When I raised this concern with the dealer he said, 'Oh, we could air-freight one out to you'.

Hhmm - after weighing it all up and thinking how much would we realistically use it upon return, we decided it wasn't the best option; still like them though and am glad that you could still buy such a thing.

Exactly. He's just taking what he wants from the incident.

The lamborghini aventador <insert your choice of car here> should never be driven as they break apart if you hit a wall at 200mph so are not to be trusted.

Who'd have thought...
