Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 S 4Matic | Spotted
So a four-cylinder might not suit a C63 - but it's absolutely the right fit for a monster CLA
So it would seem that the latest C63 still isn’t quite the ticket. A shame, really, given the fondness for the badge, the very good Mercedes and AMG hybrids that already exist, and the incredible amount of engineering effort expended. There can’t be many occasions where a 476hp 2.0-litre turbo isn’t the most discussed element of a powertrain.
For a car like the C-Class, then, it feels like eight cylinders remains a requirement for fun. Or indeed just six, as demonstrated by the CLE 53. Further down the range, however, the M139 has garnered a reputation for itself as one of the most exciting four-cylinder turbos around. Without hybrid help, it’s made the A-Class family into a set of fantastic AMG performance cars. At the moment, it can be forgotten how good the engine is in isolation. A four-cylinder AMG saloon isn’t necessarily something to fear, as the CLA proved.
The four-door 45 tends to get forgotten about a little bit. The A-Class hatchback is the more popular choice in Britain, the Shooting Brake is the really niche choice, and both the main rivals can boast larger engines: think of the Audi RS3’s 2.5-litre five and the BMW M2’s 3.0-litre six. It should absolutely be on the shortlist with those cars, however, combining the A-Class’s intensity and ability with a more handsome look and rarity in its favour.
This one in particular is interesting without any AMG Night Packages or additional carbon fibre. To these eyes it's much less fussy as a result, with the standard wheels rather than the spokier set and an almost Q-car look without the flics and spoiler. Against the RS3’s gaping front grille and, to be frank, all of the M2, it’s easy to see why the AMG’s relatively subdued look might appeal. Especially when combined with the performance on offer from 421hp and a seriously well sorted chassis.
As a 2020 car, this is one of the earliest examples of the second gen CLA 45. It’s covered less than 40,000 miles with one owner in those four years (funny how 2020 sometimes seems like yesterday, and sometimes a decade ago), and looks very smart indeed. There’s barely a blemish to be seen on the wheels, paintwork or inside. The interior has never been to everyone’s taste, sure, but those that are keen will be pleased to see one in such good condition with the full digital dash.
The asking price is £38,995, which is a good return given the new RRP was £52k before options. Bear in mind, though, that a new 421hp CLA is only available in Plus spec, and that’s from £68,355. For a car that has a nicer interior but not much else. If you want a ‘45, and there are many reasons why you might, then secondhand does look the way to go. There are plenty of similar vintage M2s and RS3s around for the money, both complete with less silly styling than the current crop, and they’re absolutely worthy of consideration as well. Just don’t let the C63 deter you from the four-cylinder AMG four-doors. The one everyone forgets about is an absolute ripper.

Having said that, the ones my way are more likely to be banana yellow hatches with the full sticky back plastic treatment and driven too fast by people who thing that pops, bangs and farts are "impressive".
As for those interiors, I've given up on E43's and E53's because they get the same puerile stick on bits, coloured trim and lighting from a low end Blackpool nightclub.
Why?? It used to be possible to buy a fast Merc without the full Halfords back catalogue of tat splattered on every surface.

This particular car definitely does look more subtle than the equivalent hatch model, I don't even mind the yellow on the seats. Better than black on black on more black!
It is sad what's happened to interior options, across the entire Mercedes-Benz model range over the past few years. I remember when I started as a tech in a dealer at the end of the 90s, that I could go a full week without seeing two cars with the same interior and exterior options, trims or colours! Even the former Designo options, now referred to as Manufaktur seems quite restrictive, and generally only available in "packs". Another by-product of WLTP tests, and the prevalence of mass PCP and leasing I suppose.
Profit margins on these must be spectacular for Mercedes-Benz.
