Hi, i currently have a Mini cooper insured with Rias and i am looking at purchasing a bmw series 2 convertible that is for sale under a Cat N.
I have read and understood the pros and cons of buying one , however when i put all the details in price comparison sites i dont have a option of declaring a Cat N ...The prices i have coming back are good so i am keen on taking the car on , i presume i could buy the insurance then tell them or am i making that difficult for myself as i did put the correct reg number in ...Any advise would be appreciated ..Thanks

Get the quote online then ring them direct to see how it pans out after telling them of the cat marker and then you should have your answer smile

Hi , i was hoping that the car being a CatN would be on the MIAFTR database but as you state a quick call should tell me..
I was thinking more of if they dont ask dont tell them as i cant see any actual law on it ,although someone may put me right on that .

You don't need to tell them.

Many thanks all , I have just put the reg in we buy any car and their valuation of a car on the forecourt is around £11000 the one I am looking at is £7000 (private sale ) and upon putting the reg in WBAC is a whopping £770 so that’s as good as a scrap price …

It makes virtually no difference what value you put down. It will only be relevant if the car is written off, in that case they will value it as a CAT N.

My concern was WBAC valuation at just £770.00

WBAC valuation isn’t relevant to insurance valuations, WBAC price vehicles based on their sales channels for said vehicles.

Wbac is not a valuation service, they pull your pants down if you need to sell it. They just don’t want your Cat N so they bid silly low prices.

It shouldn't make any difference.

After a non-fault claim last year my car got made a Cat N by the insurer of the other vehicle. When my renewal came around I declared the claim to my insurer and told them the car was a Cat N. Their only requirement was to see an MOT certificate issued after the accident.

I’ve had several ‘Cat’ cars over the years and never had to declare them to ins cos. There is nowhere on the proposal form to do it.

Many thanks all for taking time to reply and i am a lot more confident now with the car,i also did a car checker report that lines up with everything the seller as told me.. The car was windscreen front and rear damage plus headlights and rear lenses ..photos supplied .
I am also aware that if i was to sell on i could find it difficult to get shut of so i am thinking of just running it to the ground and use it as a second car ,but as said previously when i put the reg in WBAC the valuation is just £770 is that their way of saying they dont want it because its a CatN because my car checker its worth £10000 private sale .. Just find the value very low in fact its scar value ...

Pretty much all of the above - you don't need to let them know - but the insurance company is likely to take 20% off the top book value if the car is involved in a total loss. That in itself wouldn't be enough to discourage me personally.

WBAC are saying they don't want your car but they are keeping true to their name of buying any car so they are offering you next to nothing to make you go away basically

Blimey, why did you ever allow that?

There is no way I would have allowed someone else's insurer to write my car off.

OP. Insurance usually reduces the value by roughly 30%, can be a bit less or more in some cases.
Traders who will touch a write off, most won't, usually reduces the value by 30-50% depending on the car and the marker.

So, as long as you understand this when it comes to pay outs or trade ins just go for it.

It wasn't a question of allowing them to do it, they had already recorded it over a week before they bothered to tell me it wasn't an economical repair. banghead

When I was last handling motor claims in the 70s/80s we only ever recorded cars we insured not third parties' cars, but a bit of research suggested it's normal practice now (barstewards)!

But after they had deducted exactly 22% of their valuation to allow me to keep the salvage (that must be what they get from their salvage contractor) I got back just over 50% of what I paid for it 4 years earlier so it only owes me Shed money and it has made no difference at all to how it drives.

My car will be 19 years old this year and WBAC still value it around £800 so I'd never be trying to sell to trade, but it's definitely
something the OP needs to be aware of.

Got ya!

They paid you out on it.

I thought you meant they just put a marker on it.

Good result then really.
