Car insurance! How long to declare cancelled insurance for?

Looking for new insurance currently and have noticed majority of insurers ask ‘have you had any insurance cancelled’, I’m wondering how long I have to declare this for and also, if there is any insurers that ask ‘Have you had any insurance cancelled in the last 5 years’ since it has now been over 5 years it got cancelled!

Any suggestions for insurers is appreciated and also any tips to reduce the insurance would be much appreciate too!

There’s no cutoff, there might be some insurer out there who only wants to know for the last x years but I don’t know of them.

You have to answer the question truthfully, so if they ask have you ever - that's what it means.

In my experience, speaking as someone who has had two policies cancelled, the first issue with it is that it will immediately stop you getting quotes from some insurers. Since I need a specialist policy I always go through a broker so that isn't a problem for me. The second issue is the reason for the cancellation. I'm sure if it was something like fraud it's going to affect availability and premiums for a very long time, if not forever. Mine were due to errors and decades ago and as far as I can tell, they have no effect on my premiums but I still make sure insurers are aware and get an acknowledgement from the broker that they have been taken into account.
