Non-black convertible roofs

Whilst idly browsing this month’s C&SC, dribbling over cars I’ll never see let alone own, I noticed a black R8 for sale with a red hood. It looks great, just not as good as it would with a black hood.

I configured a Mercedes once, an E Class I think it was, brown with a brown hood. Should have been great, but no.

I love a convertible, but I’ve never seen a non-black roof that looks as good as a black roof (tin-tops excluded). . Prove me wrong…

Our old 986 Boxster in silver has a dark blue roof (and interior) and yep you're right - it's horrible! The car was perfect in every other way but I still had to think long and hard about whether I could live with it.

My blue on blue or I suppose technically, it's navy on blue.

I think silver cars with a red roof can look great, red cars with a red roof can look awful. Dark blue hoods can look very stylish too.......

My old green Mx5 originally had a black roof but tan leather interior (Eunos import), I replaced the roof with a tan mohair roof, looked 10x better on the car with the tan interior. IMHO

I specc’ed my old e class in old man burgundy, with a dark red roof and tan interior. According to MB the roof wasn’t reccoemnded with the exterior, and the interior was recommended with the paint colour. What do MB know…as standard it would have had a black roof and black seats with red stitching!!

Black roofs for longevity but any colour looks better when new imo. Beige or red look amazing on the right car.

I used to have a 986 Boxster RS60, they came in GT silver, but came with the option of a Red roof/interior, I quote liked it.

My old MX5, always loved the tan hood against the dark blue body.

My nautilus blue (green blue metallic) Elise has a dark blue roof and looks ace; much better than it would with a black one.

My roof is a sort of odd silvery grey colour. At first I didn't like it, believing it should be black, but it's grown on me.

Now I couldn't care less

Mines orange, suits the car better than the black roofs.



In terms of soft tops, I love a red one on a silver car, and that beige Bentley one looks great too.

Nothing wrong with a bit of colour. I don't know who decided that cars should all be made in black and white these days, but it's really boring...

I even smile when I see a pink wrapped car go past because at least it's something different to look at.

Generally I prefer black roofs, classic, easy to care for as they age, and because its not a colour no need to match anything. Blue gets a second best.

Colours look awful as they age and fade, particularly red, beige, grey, white just no.

I like an interior/exterior contrast but combining too many colours generally looks a mess.

The car is silver and has individual navy blue fine nappa leather interior
