lost car key

my oh has lost her car keys, problem is she is in Sheffield visiting kid whos in hospital, i have a spare , but im in amesbury, and dont drive, whats the best way to get her my spare key quickly.

Probably pay a taxi firm to deliver it would be the quickest.

Is she in a breakdown service provider? I know many years ago, my dad lost his keys and IIRC the AA sorted something out for him.

Based on the fact it’s a 10 hour train journey vs a 3.5 hour drive, I’d be looking for a friend with a car and owe them beers for the rest of the year.

A mobile auto locksmith should be able to come out to her and cut her a new key.
Just google for one close to her.

Brace yourself for a £500ish bill though.

Cutting the key isnt the issue these days - its the electronics and key coding.

No reputable place is going to open a car and make a key without seeing the v5/proof of ownership

Well my faith in humans has been restored, she went to the main reception at the hospital and someone had found them and handed them in over night, she had probably dropped them somewhere, tbh her heads all over the place as her daughter is very unwell .

I have put an Airtag on ever set of keys I own (also in my wallet) to help with just such an eventuality.

We have a small metal disc engraved with an "if Found..." message on all our important keys.

They are a couple of quid on ebay (engraved pet name tags).

When we go on a driving holiday I always give the spare key to my partner to keep in her handbag. I have nightmares about being in Scotland, hundreds of miles from home and having lost the car key.

Thank you, and lets hope so. I must admit, i was pleasantly surprised that someone handed them in. I was half expecting her to tell me the car was gone aswell.

That's a good plan if you're on a long journey. We often drive from Kent to Wales to visit family and I've never thought of taking the spare keys with us. We sometimes go hiking so could easily lose the keys somewhere remote.

My recurring nightmare with keyless is the car locking itself with the fob in the car. It's not supposed to be possible, but my daughter managed it - thankfully she was only 3 miles away. Newer versions of her car are remote openable.

How is the fob in the car without the driver?

• taken out of a pocket because it's uncomfortable and left in the centre console (I usually do this as my car has fairly tight buckets)
• left in a handbag that was on the passenger seat while she put something in the boot
• fell out of pocket by accident

When I was young I used to regularly get the ferry from the IOM to Liverpool. As I got seasick I would usually be outside on the decks. I was so paranoid about dropping the car keys into the Irish Sea I would chain them to my jeans!
