Getting online insurance quotes
Discussion
Why isn't there a central repository for the information that nearly ALL insurance companies ask you for EVERY time you get a bleedin' quote.
Name, first line of address, DOB, postcode, reg of car, any mods, annual mileage, social/domestic/pleasure etc, years no claims, have you lived in the uk all your life, garaged/drive/street, anyone else driving, fully comp?, the list goes on and on and on and on and on.
Yes, if you use Go Compare the Money Supermarket.com etc. then they keep the info centrally between sessions, but they only search across subscribing companies, not including the likes of Flux, Lancaster or a number of other popular companies used by our community.
Surely it's not beyond the wit of someone to hold that info on our behalf (with us being responsible for the content, obviously). There would need to be adequate protection around the data and of course there are data confidentiality issues. If this information was held centrally somewhere then when you want an online quote the company being asked would simply download all the relevant info, with permission of course.
Last week I had to ring round to get a new year's quotes for my hobby car and I was losing the will to live after about an hour. Of course, if said companies came up with a sensible renewal quote then none of this would be necessary, but has anyone received a renewal with single figure percentage increase in the last few years? Thought not.
I don't see how it's to anyone's benefit to make this hugely repetitive process so bleedin' onerous.

Identity Theft is at an all time high apparently and increasing so be careful what you wish for.
It isn’t even a recordable crime.
Many cases of “ ghost brokers “ being set up using comparison sites.
Most Insurers contribute to entities like CIFAS but if your details are obtained it can cause a fair amount of stress and hassle even if no financial loss per se.
Name / address / DOB is usually all that is required to start.

thats why i only use the meerkats, go compare etc. they save your details year to year
anyone not on their lists like direct line can go **** themselves
Indeed. Unless you are looking for specialist cover or terms I cant see the point in going to individual insurers.anyone not on their lists like direct line can go **** themselves
Because they want to make it hard to shop around so you'll accept their outrageous quotes.
The insurance companies don't need to know your relationship to King Richard III to provide you with a quote but ask for it anyway because you only have so much time and the more you waste getting a quote, the fewer competitors you can look at.

I'd accept that if so many of them didn't willingly work with the comparison sites? The insurance companies don't need to know your relationship to King Richard III to provide you with a quote but ask for it anyway because you only have so much time and the more you waste getting a quote, the fewer competitors you can look at.

Mine has been going down each year... I have no issue in owning and controlling that data - as others say, there is an option already in the comparison engines, I wouldn't wish there to be a central store with all my data...
I tried an insurance company that doesn't use a comparison site just to see what they'd quote. Adrian Flux - £1,840 when the cheapest quote via confused.com came in at £350. And AF had the balls to call me the day after to say they could 'probably' knock off a few pounds. I didn't bother asking them to knock off £1,500 and I'll stick with comparison sites and getting some more off via topcashback.
It's all a bit strange as THIS THREAD suggests that renewal quotes are all over the place...

It’s doable, but it’s a big security risk on the company who provides that service to hold that amount of personal data. As there is no money to be made from it, there is zero incentive for any organisation to offer this, outside of the comparison sites I think.Pitre said:

I’m gonna poke a guess you’re under 40? I remember sitting doing insurance quotes on the phone with the yellow pages on the floor in front of me, going through each insurer one by one. You could easily lose an afternoon getting your car insured. Sites like Meerkat, Confused, MSE etc are genius. I don’t see the need for more than what we’ve got. If you’re moaning about the accessibility of insurance quotes now, frankly you deserve to be punished for your laziness. It’s all on a plate for you, but yet you want it even easier.

I had to waste 10 minutes of my life on Go Compare early August for renewal on September 1st and had over 80 quotes for each car, and I am being ripped off to the tune of £194 for our C3 Picasso and even worse £222 for my 2015 BMW 528i.
How some of these insurers can sleep at night I do not know.
