Is there a better feeling than passing an MOT first time?

Took a new (to me) Z3 3.0 for its MOT today fully expecting a fail and a laundry list of issues, and it’s only gone and passed first time.

Suns shining and I have 12 months MOT, a great day!

Is there a better feeling than an unexpected MOT pass?

I like it when the car clearly hasn't moved and advisories from last year have mysteriously been fixed.

I like it when you leave a car for MOT and when you think they are nearly finished start refreshing the MOT check site. Then you get that nervous anticipation as you refresh and there is nothing better than refreshing and seeing the pass before the MOT garage have even contacted you.

I took my new to me shed for it's first MOT in my ownership last year and it was even better as it didn't get a single advisory.

i dunno, what was the list of advisories on the last MOT? that'll give you a pretty good indication of how the next MOT is likely to go...

as for good feelings... i like it when a niggling problem turns out to be a cheap and easy (ideally free) fix.

Curiously, after our car failed its MOT spectacularly, a friend entered details into an app, which gave it a 60% chance of passing its MOT next time!

Worth another go?

I've just bought a nigh on 10 year old skoda superb and its passed every single MOT first time with not a single advisory.

My colleague always boasted how his Citroen Picasso passed first time every time. He didn't consider the costly pre MOT checks to be valid in his showing off.

Its a fair point, but in the scheme of things an unexpected MOT pass is more likely on a number of levels.

Great to know it's done for another twelve months, but... for me, the result of an m.o.t. test should never be unexpected. The only failure we've had, that I can remember in the past couple of decades, was for... would you believe... a bald tyre. In mitigation, it was on my other half's bike, the tread pattern didn't make assessing it easy and I'd been seriously ill for a good while, so hadn't been giving it the ongoing attention it would normally had received. Even so, something that I should have picked up before taking it for test, and definitely should not have come as a surprise...

And, as for better feeling, there's always that feeling that follows the dread of a major engine rebuild that turns out to be a loose plug cap!

Yes MoT day is a day of nerves for me, and I spend it smashing F5 to refresh. The best feeling is seeing the pass, the worst is smashing refresh and seeing it flash up as "fail"!

But i'd still rather have the car thats been through a decent pre-mot and then passed with no advisories because it shows they are willing to pay to get work done whereas you see many cars with the same advisories year on year without being done with the absolute minimum being done to get the pass.

There is absolutely zero need for a car to be presented for MOT with major issues like the tyre cords being exposed.

Try a vehicle thats highly modified with yourself (having no formal qualifications) having done most of the work passing an MOT first time. Thats happiness..

So much of this stuff comes down to discretion.

I have a 13 year-old Volvo XC 90, which I bought just over two years ago. The MOT history is good, but there was a recurring advisory for front suspension bushes for 3 years, before disappearing for the 2 MOTs prior to my acquisition of the car. I just assumed they’d been changed.

First MOT in my hands, the tester picked them up again and advised them. I put it on my to-do list for some point during the following year and then completely forgot about it. There was no issue with the way the car drove, and the tyres were wearing evenly.

Put it in for MOT this year, expecting a potential fail or at least another advisory, and it wasn’t even mentioned.

Both of the MOTs in my hands were done at the same local garage who I’ve used for years and I trust implicitly. Last year wasn’t their usual tester though (he was on holiday).

Satifying and relieving when you've done all the maintenance work yourself for years on end and it sails straight through yet again.

Worrying when your MOT is in the depths of winter and you just don't feel up to servicing and going right through the car until May when the weather breaks.

The garage I use know I tend to check the MOT check site. When they do call they always say "As I'm sure you've already checked it's passed with no issues"

Passed an MOT first time a few weeks back, on Lotus Excel that hasn't been on the road since 1997. I dug it out of a bush 12 years ago and have been working on it since so a very big moment for me!

Huh? How can you possibly fail on lights unless the bulb blows in between you parking up at the MOT station and the tester switching them on. It takes five minutes to go over a car the day before and check everything works.

39 years. Quite a few cars and motorbikes. Never had a fail. I genuinely don’t understand how people let their vehicles get into such states and yet present them for a test with bulbs out, broken wipers, bald tyres etc Admittedly I’ve been lucky in that I’ve not had any failures on stuff that I can’t really see without having a ramp etc.
