Porsche 911, Ferrari 308… Peugeot?
Discussion
The Porsche 911, as the story goes was meant to be called the 901, Peugeot objects blah blah, rest is history: so how come Ferrari got away with calling the 308 ‘308’, with a pesky zero as its middle number? Had some patent/ trademark licensing agreement lapsed by the time Ferrari wanted to use it?
Good question.
Maybe Ferrari argued they had a precedence which went unchallenged with the 206 Dino?
Maybe they argued that the ‘0’ meant something as it was the 0 of a 3.0 litre engine?
Maybe Pininfarina intervened as a mutual client and told Peugeot that it wasn’t a battle worth picking?

And BMW with the 501, 502, 503 and 507.
This article has an interesting theory that it was Peugeot settling scores against Ferdinand Porsche (founder of the Porsche brand) and his son-in-law, Anton Piëch (father of Ferdinand Piech), rather than an attack on the Porsche brand.
During the second world war the French car manufacturers came under German control. Porsche and Piëch go out of their way to obtain the guardianship of Peugeot (instead of Adler), and Peugeot were forced to work for Volkswagen.
