So you have tickets for the 2025 FOTU……what car would you want to take?

Budget and availability not important…..

When I first went to France in the early 1980’s I saw the Renault 30 for the first time.

I still think they are a handsome design.

However the jingoistic side of me feels that something from the ashes of British Leyland would be most appropriate, and besides a Douvrin V6 and all that velour is far too plush to be truly unexceptional.

So here is my choice, the Rover Metro GTa.

The slightly crapper hot hatch from ARG.

I will probably own one at some point because it’s an attractive car that drives well.

My father bought a brand new 1978 Toyota Cressida in this rather inappropriate colour with beige nylon velour seats and brown dash with chrome highlights. Very mini-Americana when BL were all wedgy ( he actually replaced it with a Princess 2 ) and Ford were sharp and sloping their noses. The performance from the 2.0 was unexceptional and the handling adequate. Steering wasn't even rack and pinion. Now, of course, it's as cool as Siberia but back then, it was quite banal.

How unexpected might this be ?
Renault 21 Nevada wagon, 7 seats possible, all looking forward.

Nerd fact : the 21 was produced with 2 sets of "front end bodyparts" with different lengths,
for 1,9 and 2,0 l transverse the front was shorter than with the 2,2l gtx from the R25 and diesel longitudinal.

My teacher at primary school had one exactly like that. S reg if I remember rightly, would have been nearly new then.

My Dad had a Maxi HL in tundra green (with added rust), I'd take one of those if I could.

Hardly unexceptional. These were quite an exotic thing, when they were new.

They were certainly unusual at the time and quite rare, but I wouldn't say exotic. It's a family crossover that was ahead of its time.

If you have tickets for 2025, you've probably not got much change to actually buy a car. The admission price is becoming extortionate.

Nice suggestions.

I've passengered in a Cressida, it was that Coca Cola brown colour, darker than what I think Ford called Roman Bronze or I made that paint colour name up.

I've driven a K-Series Metro and thought it was a pleasant car to drive.

I've driven a Renault 20TX, the 2.2 litre Renault 20. I think that would be rarer than the Renault 30. I don't think a Renault 30 as unexceptional.

I quite fancy going but it's a long way away from me.
I would take the Allegro Vanden Plas I used to own (Vanden Plas 1500 for the pedants) but I don't think it's on the road any more.

How much were the tickets? All sold out now
