Car Stolen... Advice Needed
Discussion
The "rolling codes" thing is a bit misleading.
Relay theft works by tricking the key and car that they are much closer together than they really are, allowing the theives to open and start the car.
Without knowing (or wanting to know) details of the specific car, if it has keyless entry and start, that's the risk. More recent cars have systems that put the keys to sleep and unable to be woken by hte kit theives use.
Pop the keys n your microwave until you can buy something to store the keys in, eg, https://defendersecurityproducts.co.uk/shop/crimeb... or see if the keyless systems can be disabled.

Did you report it to your insurance/police?
Reason I ask is that if I were to find it in the way you did, I wouldn't do either on the basis of increased insurance payments for the next five years.
So, if you haven't yet, or planning to do so, might be worth bearing in mind.
Idiotic advice. Reason I ask is that if I were to find it in the way you did, I wouldn't do either on the basis of increased insurance payments for the next five years.

OP has now mentioned that they reported it prior to finding it on the app, which was not mentioned in the first post. OP did correctly report.
However...had they found it prior to contacting police/ insurance, then not reporting it would be a wise move as they would not have had a "theft" on their insurance records for the next 5 years.
What would make it worthwhile reporting to take that hit? Moral obligation? Help with police stats?

Would say always report it to the police. Reason I ask is that if I were to find it in the way you did, I wouldn't do either on the basis of increased insurance payments for the next five years.

As in them 3 miles they may have pinged a speed or red light cam. Would be a right pain in a few weeks time when the NIP turns up.
All so for the whats it worth ( probably not much ) more crimes reported in you area , might result in a higher police presence.
But mainly the hastle of proving you didn't earn then 3 points!
Just to add insurance side of things, had a car pinched myself, 6 ish weeks later found and i got it back, insurance paid a few costs, no repair stuff needed. But no increased premiums on either of my cars. Did compare sites with and without claim.

Found three miles away, but that doesn’t mean the car was driven three miles straight there and dumped, it could have gone anywhere before it ended up there, and could have been used for hours between being stolen and being found. OP was right to report, if for no other reason than get him off the hook should the car have been used in anything untoward.

Faraday pouch, steering disclock and chain across driveway wall installed. I hope these small things will deter future attempts.
Thanks to all who contributed to my query.
I found faraday pouches can lose their effectiveness after a few months. Thanks to all who contributed to my query.
We keep our key in a metal tin in the drawer now….
Sorry to hear the experience. Would you mind sharing the model?
