What does this road sign mean?

Not the one with the 40 in it but the arrows below.

It's situated at the top of a motorway slip road on the entry to a large roundabout.

I'm struggling to find its meaning!

Perhaps left over from roadworks and an accompanying free standing sign which might have made sense of it has been removed?

It doesn’t look like a legit highways sign in font or size to me.

Its suggesting you go either side of the lamp-post, which is excellent advice.

It looks like you are coming to a junction and whichever way you go is subject to a 40mph limit.

Is it to alert drivers to the fact they are about to join a road with traffic in both directions? (as opposed to the motorway).

I don't know 100% and it would seem a rather obvious thing to need to point out.

Totally correct. You'd be in trouble if you turned right!

What would be useful to know is what symbol is on the opposite side of the 40mph limit symbol.

Closest sign I can think of is two way traffic ahead when on a one way road that is ending.

Should be in a red triangle though.

Yes but roundabouts have exits so one may travel clockwise but eventually there will be an exit. I take inference that ther are two exists and both are 40MPH. No idea what it means if there are more exists. Maybe a new sign is required.

I actually think its not a bad idea in principle to let a driver know in advance the limits on the exit roads.
