How/where to sell a private plate

Im reluctantly in charge of clearing the belongings of a deceased family member

One "treasure" is a private number plate which could be worth a modest amount of cash

Question being were or how to sell this plate for the best price for their kids who are still at uni?

There are a number of plate traders visible through a web search - Im naturally cautious that they will not necessarily give me a good price - although perhaps I should just stick it on an online auction like ebay or collecting cars or whatever

What is the plate...feel free to add a few X's to hide the actual plate.

That will ultimately decide where you should advertise it and people will advise.

Either put it on the books on one of the big plate dealers where it could takes years to sell.

Ask them to adjust the price so it sells in two months.

Or put it on ebay with a 99p start, or place it on Collectingcars.

All depends on the plate. Dateless? 3x3? 2x3? 1x3? 2x2? 2x1 etc

I sold mine on http://www.plates4less.co.uk. You set the price, they add on buyer fees and handle all the paperwork. Only downside was they sent a cheque rather than doing a bank transfer (this was a couple of years ago mind).

Obviously you need some idea of the plate's value.

Some plates will always sell quickly due to broad appeal. Others might fetch a decent price but could be on sale for months till an interested buyer spots it. No harm in trying a sale on eBay with an educated guess as to price as it won’t cost you anything.

ABC123 seems to be worth more than 123ABC, and A1 is probably worth more than 1W!

ABC1, may appeal to Albert Bertie Carrot.......so a little more info is needed.

Or, if it is a particularly good one, find a dealer or two with good contact lists. There's one I use who gives me a call whenever he gets offered something that might be of interest to me. I would expect that he does the same with other people. Probably better to take a few £ less and have it sell quickly rather than hang around in the hope that someone browsing spots it?
