Cheapest short term car rental option

Long story short, my wife’s car failed its MOT and is uneconomical to repair. This got us thinking about a cheap electric car (that’s another story).

Upshot is, we need a short term vehicle. So far, I have the following options, unless anyone can think of something I haven’t?

- rent a car/van (whatever is cheapest)
- buy a cheap shed (unknown quantity etc)
- all inclusive car rental/lease for a month

I even tried bearman, but he is in Wales and I’m in Lincolnshire sadly.

How far is she going to drive in the month? Does she have access to any other car for some of those trips?

She will use my car, so this solution is for me. We live in rural Lincolnshire, so public transport is not a consideration.

I'd look to get a old stter for as cheap as possible if timings are uncertain. Costs will soon mount up if you hire a car for at length of time. If you can get a car with a reasonable MOT you should be able to recoup most of your money if you sell it on in a couple of months.

So how many miles are you going to need to do in the other car then? Rather than spending £100's on car, tax and insurance. Would a taxi be cheaper?

And how much to fix the failed car?

Why do you need a vehicle for just a month? Why don't you just replace the MOT failure?

Hertz do EVs for around £100 per week, could be a good way to see if you can live with one. Only issue is getting to Hertz, Leeds and Birmingham do them cheap.

£100 a week to rent a Polestar? If insurance is included, that's probably cheaper than any other way of driving one, even longer term!
Not necessairly the cheapest way to run any car though, an old snotter is the best way to do that. If you can tolerate driving around in something with some minor bodywork damage, you'll be able to buy something that works with a few months MOT for not much more than scrap value.

Insurance is included, I had one in the summer it has about £2500 excess on claims, an annual excess cover policy is only £44.
Two weeks rental is the max at that rate, but you can rebook another.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The long term aim is a used electric car, but there are several complications which mean we can’t make this happen straight away, hence the short car need for a vehicle.

It's an approved used Suzuki - will come with a 12 month manufacturer backed used car warranty
