Private Reg - Retention

Morning,

Just looking for some help with a private reg. I had a plate on retention a while back and gifted it to my brother but he's now given it me back and I have the V778 form with his details on. Is there anyway to add it to my online plate account simply? I've checked .gov and it looked like I needed to pay £80 to get a new V750? I don't want to put it on a car atm, I just wanted them all managed in one place

Tbh I've always found my so called on line account less than accurate with certainly not all plates owned showing up !
Rather than pay £80 could you not just add yourself as nominee to the plate certificate in question and get that sent off and returned -I don't think they charge for that ?

The number on the certificate is all you need to put it on a car, so I don't know why you'd bother changing the owner in the first place.

What is the online plate account? Never heard of one of those before? Do tell more!

This, it doesn't matter who's name it is in, as long as you have the retention certificate, you can put it on any car.

Really not that exciting - it can be created using the link on the DVLA personalised reg site.
It supposedly then allows quicker purchase or ease of adding other retained plates.
As I said I've never found mine up to date though or indeed particularly useful !

Never knew that existed. I’ll take a look as I have a few on retention and don’t want to forget the renewals.

You only need the retention document to assign a number.
The name on the document is not important.

As an aside my wife has a private reg on her lease car, that's being changed at the end of the month so we transferred the plate off it.

The document came back to us with the lease company as the name on the form. This is because they had to apply to remove it from the vehicle.
This isn't a problem to us, it will simply be reassigned to the next car, and so on and so forth. Presumably she will stop leasing one day and the plate will be assigned to a car we own, then it will become 'ours' again.

However, it is an curious legal position as some plates are worth huge sums, and the lease company technically 'owns' these plates.

Imagine if someone were to use these plates on vehicles they own as an asset on a spreadsheet (devious companies have done worse), then the lease company folded, you'd then have to try and get your plate back from the receiver.

I never understood the point of the nominees etc for this very reason. You just need the number, I don't get it

Thanks for your replies, it was more my OCD kicking in wanted everything in 1 place (albeit the clunky .gov site)
