G-Power launches new 700hp M2
More power, more carbon, more noise, more everything for latest modified M2
The current G87 BMW M2 is not really for shy and retiring types. Even in subtler paint shades, the sheer overtness of the styling means it’ll never pass unnoticed. However, that unapologetic appearance, plus a legendarily tweakable engine, makes the M2 manna from heaven for the aftermarket; from the factory it’s a punchy performance car in every regard, which the tuners can then gleefully run with as far as the customer desires. G-Power isn’t known for any half measures, and its latest take on the M2 gets an overhaul that’ll be familiar to anyone familiar with the brand. Certainly we’ve never seen so much carbon fibre on the smallest M car, new parts here include the front wings (with arch vents), bonnet and rear spoiler. This is easy to poke fun at, though it’ll be a useful saving from mass at the front end. And if a carbon bonnet is good enough for the M5 CS, it’s probably good enough for an M2.
G-Power suggests that the arches are ‘adequately filled’ by its range of forged wheels, 20-inch at the front and 21s at the rear. No arguing with that - you’d barely fit a wet wipe in the gap between tyre and metal. And while no suspension changes are mentioned in G-Power’s latest update, it’s worth noting that those wheel diameters are only an inch larger than standard.
As with similar G-Power builds, what’s under the carbon bonnet comes in stages. Buyers can opt for just software, which unlocks 600hp and 531lb ft all on its own, or go for a second, 650hp stage that requires an exhaust as well. Still feels like an awful lot of power for not very much work. Indeed the full 700hp only requires software, downpipes and the exhaust, which also brings 618lb ft. Larger and heavier than ever this M2 may be, but it’s going to be ballistically fast with those outputs.
G-Power says its proprietary software, of course, is the key to getting the most from the M2, as it removes ‘the factory-set tuning lockout’. It can also remove the top speed limiter and adjust the fuel cut-off for ‘for an even more aggressive sound’.
Suffice it to say that however lairy you want an M2 to be, G-Power can accommodate. Enough to make a plain old M Performance car look a bit tame. Which, presumably, is exactly the point of a modified M2; however far BMW goes, the aftermarket goes further…
..I do like the green one and it must be an absolute, and literal, blast to drive. I’ve had a couple of drives in tuned F and G series M cars and they’ve been very exciting. Plus reliability has been great too based on owner feedback.
Give me a 650 bhp one with a manual box, my M240i has 460 ps, stage 1, open diff, m lite suspesnsion and it's fine, I love it, prob could do with a bit more power! I'm sure this is more than capable of handling that power
