Now everyone has a favourite of who to use for breakdown cover, be it AA, RAC, Green Flag - whoever.

Ive been with the RAC for 9 year now and in general have been very happy with the service I've received.

However, this morning I saw that the monthly direct debit I have been paying has shot up to over £60 a month.
I have the full whistles and bells cover, European Breakdown, onward travel, the lot! For both me and my wife.

But over 700 quid a year is ridiculous. It's my fault for not picking up on the Direct Debit ages ago.

So I ring up the RAC, told them I was leaving as the price was way too high.
They countered with £45, I said it needs to be sub £30. They countered again with £35.
Again I said no. They then added business cover (I do 1 or 2 business trips a year these day in my car) and sealed the deal for £32.50 a month.
A huge reduction with more cover.
Just shows how much these companies can discount when they want to!

The moral of the story, check your renewals for direct debits and subscriptions. Off now to cancel several other subscription I have.

I had the same issue in December with the RAC.

I paid £214.99 for a year in December 2023 for everything except European Cover, then they wanted over £340 last month. eek

Called them up and somehow they managed to get down to £147 fixed for 2 years, because I had been with them since 1996 allegedly.

Best to avoid Auto-renewals and shop around!

I use auto aid. I'm sure it's about £8 a month or something for me and the wife. Only had to use it once but I was recovered and the car on the way to the garage within 30 minutes of me phoning them.

This. Breakdown cover, travel insurance and phone cover for free.

The only drawback is that I have to read Car magazine every month. frown

Maybe, but bank account cover is usually limited on how far you will get recovered and doesn't cover Home Start.

With the car insurance it only covers the car insured so if you have more than one car you'd have to pay twice. And still not get Home Start or unlimited recovery.

With my Personal RAC cover I get all of that for both cars, and for any other car I'm in.

My bank's breakdown cover doesn't specify a car, so they're all covered, and two of them get a year's cover every time I get them serviced at the main dealer.

The moral of the story is to bounce between AA and RAC using cashback sites

In your position, I’d be checking all my DD’s to see what else I may be over paying on!

Wow!

My AA membership is only £8.08/mth!

That was an emergency membership too when the clutch gave out on a mway heading home from an airport

My aunt has greenflag and has done for years. Renewal has auto crept up to £147.
I've lifted the auto renewal, let it lapse 24hrs and got it all again for £49 with them as new cover. Ridiculous renewal gouging practices!

I think my Start Rescue package. For a named car only was £50/year.

I did have cause to use them and it was a decent service

I can't believe anyone would pay £700+

Autorenew: companies love it 'cos folks by and large are complacent.

Moral of the story - use AutoAid or someone similar.

If you must have AA/RAC, then use Quidco/TopCashBack to halve the cost when cashback is paid.

NEVER renew. Cancel and take out cover using cashback sites as a new customer each year.

£94 for the year for auto aid. That’s includes ticking the box for wifey, home start and ‘over 16 years’ for my boxster toy.

Only needed them once on 5 years. Flat battery in a train station after I left a light on. They dispatch the AA anyway

StartRescue for £50 a year for two cars. £30 a call out. Last time I called a breakdown firm called out was before my last two cars (so before 1998).

I have also subsequently cancelled Amazon music. Something call Hayu which was part of Prime TV, Apple TV (will renew that when there is another series of Slow Horses).

Tried to cancel the Disney Channel but there was uproar from the kids, so I've cancelled the Sky TV Kids channels instead as they never watch them.
I've also cancelled Bannatynes Gym membership as I never went.

Including the RAC reduction I reckon I'm about 160 quid a month better off! Or should I say I have £160 quid more to spend in the pub! So win win!

Had exactly the same with them a few years back , shameful behaviour, but for everyone who lets it lapse they’ll be 9 that don’t bother and keep on paying.
