Expensive new cars, everywhere

The economy is stagnant, but I'm taken aback by just how many expensive new or newish cars I see on the road, chiefly: Tesla Model X, 3, Y, BMW iX, i4, Taycan, Range Rover, Defender, Merc EQC, Audi eTron - they're everywhere.
A few months ago at hospital I noticed a nurse exiting a brand new Range Rover Velar. Today to top it all off it was a Sainsbury's worker putting their shift bib on as they locked their new Lexus SUV. All anecdotal musings, but what the hell is going on?

For the electric ones it's almost certainly salary sacrifice or through a company. It can be cheaper to drive a new EV than what you would probably consider as a "normal" ICE of a few years old.
Also the occupation of the driver doesn't take into account household income and shared cars.
As a blend of both, my wife works part time in a low paid job but usually drives my salary sacrificed EV with a £60k+ list price. It is a cheaper family car for us than the previous 6 year old diesel Qashqai. For the days we need a second car, the runabout is worth a couple of grand at most.

Young teachers I know in their first few years of teaching, or still training! are pulling up in 24 plate cars when I and many of my era have never had a new car! They just sign up to the pcp package. I also think in some cases families have money, but don’t tell you (naturally) so they are unaffected, and / or make there young adults life easier when for most normies it’s not an option. It’s a different world these days…
Friend telling me about their new electric car via the NHS scheme where his wife works, it should be a national scandal, cheaper to have a subsidised brand new car than run about in a 10 year old Aygo.

I don't blame anyone taking full advantage of such deals, you'd be daft not to when its such a giveaway, but please stop the hypocritical environmental preaching.

Lots of people have access to cheap PCP’s and salary sacrifice cars. I get a new company car every 2 years and choose a EV as it saves over £750 a month tax. My partner has a Macan as it’s safe and reliable and her money.
For reference one of my tenants has a new Ford Explorer on Motability as their son has learning difficulties.

Most of those I wouldn't consider expensive and I'm as tight as they come. The Defender is the one my OH and I notice most. They go hand in hand with Turkey teeth and white rendered houses with Anthracite f
king grey windows and doors and they're everywhere. There's a street near us with 4. If you look at all the cars on the road as a whole they’re generally quite old and quite mundane, I think it’s just that the fancier cars stand out. Just totally guessing but I’d say roughly 20% of the cars I see are ‘expensive’ but, to be fair, 20% of the population earn good money where £400-500 a month really isn’t much more than running something much older.
I was just doing the sums on my relatively crappy Freelander 2 and it probably averages £3000 a year on depreciation and maintenance. You can get something modern and fancy for a couple of grand a year extra and probably save half of that in fuel.
I think it’s just because there’s still a lot of people with good cash flow and good incomes.

I think people have got used to cheap debt, for me in my 50,s its out of my comfort zone, but borrowing has been very cheap for a long time, i can remember people complaining when mortgages got to over 5%.
My first mortgage we nearer 15%
as a result i like to own things, today people are used to buying on debt. As long as they can afford the monthlies all good.
God help them if interest rates spike like the 90,s.

I spoke to a dealer a couple of years ago in a high end dealership in Sheffield, he said hardly anyone comes to the dealership, they call, ask what the monthly payment is, agree it and get it delivered, he said nobody buys a car cash any more.
