First AGTZ Twin Tail debuts at Retromobile
Classic Alpine Le Mans racer celebrated with first completed commission of stunning Twin Tail
There really could be nowhere better for the first production AGTZ Twin Tail to be shown than Retromobile. It’s based on a French car, of course, and pays homage to another; it’s new but it’s also classic, and therefore exactly the kind of thing best celebrated in Paris this time of year. La Squadra, whose idea the Twin Tail was, might be a Polish company, and Zagato of course has its roots in Milan, but the AGTZ will always be right at home in France.
A brief reminder of what this car is, for those that missed the past couple of years: built from an Alpine A110, the Twin Tail is a homage to the Alpine A220 racer of the 60s, which competed with both long- and short-tail bodies. The former would help for minimal drag on high speed tracks, the latter was more agile for hillclimbs and such.
The Twin Tail comes with a removable rear body section, so it can be easily configured to both layouts. Each of the 19 cars will be handcrafted at Zagato. This example, commission #3, is the first completed customer car.
Described as ‘an owner’s personal take on the original A220 story’, it features a colourway that brings to mind chassis #1736, a 1969 Le Mans entrant that updated the ‘220 with further aerodynamic and mechanical tweaks. Promise in testing didn’t translate into race success, but we can probably all agree that it makes for stunning livery more than half a century later.
AGTZ says this build features ‘a host of bespoke details’ including the wheels, and the double bubble roof means its origins are never in doubt. Given the scope of personalisation on offer, even bolder Twin Tail specs seem likely to follow. Despite the green accents, this one looks familiar to those already seen from AGTZ; imagine it in, say, yellow…
That could well follow soon, as the next Twin Tails coming from Zagato are ‘already in progress and set to be unveiled soon.’ There are still a few build slots remaining, however, from the original 19, for those who really want to stand out on the concours lawn. Or, indeed, at the 50th Retromobile this time next year.
A car to take out any logic in terms of existence or price.
It is a niche and exclusive option for those already with a multi car garage and the expense is irrelevant in this context.
