Lotus Exige S | PH Auction Block

Honey I shrank the supercar - and made it even better

If not the most surprising bit of product development ever announced, it was heartening to see the Lotus Emira Turbo SE confirmed for sale in the UK. The badge is a nice nod to the past (when the future of Lotus looks mighty perilous), and the spec should bring the best from the AMG powertrain. The fact that the SE makes the Emira look as good as it ever has, especially in red with those new wheels, really is the cherry on top. Even at £90k.

But if it’s a stunning red Lotus sports car you’re after, look no further than the PH auctions. Because going under the hammer later this week is an S2 Exige S. And even with strong residuals, it’s not going to cost £90,000. This year marks a quarter of a century of the Exige, the incredible K-Series engined coupe first emerging in 2000. It was only made for a year, in very small numbers, and even by Lotus standards the S1 Exige was pretty extreme. The most recent S3 matured the Exige to some extent, doubling the size of the engine and adding hundreds of kilos with some Evora bits. Still a wonderful car, though a very different prospect to the four-cylinder Exiges.

This is why S2 cars like this one remain so coveted, more than 20 years after launch. They represent that sweet spot between the raw, unfiltered nature of the original and the more accommodating (all things being relative) S3. You’ll likely know plenty already: 8,000rpm Toyota power was a boon, American sales opened up Lotus to a whole new audience, and a GT3 race car took the Exige’s plucky giant-killing nature to the track.

While there’s no such thing as an undesirable S2 Exige, this one is an S. S for Supercharged, of course, which bumped power from the Toyota 2ZZ 1.8 from 190hp to comfortably beyond 200hp. There was an even more useful uptick in torque as well, so often the benefit of forced induction, making the Exige a little less frenetic at everyday speeds. The S remains the most sought-after S2.

This one arguably more than most, with engine work that should now see it producing 260hp. It’s showing fewer than 45,000 miles still, or just 2,500 per annum now it’s 18 years old; there are plenty of owners in the Exige’s past but plenty of history as well, those who perhaps found it too full on at least taking care of it. The current keeper will have it serviced and MOT’d for the auction winner.

Pretty compelling, right? Lotuses like this, cars like this, aren’t going to be made again, so the best examples of those that did happen look more exciting than ever. From B-road blasting to track day thrills, there really isn’t much beating an Exige. You don’t even have to worry about a fiddly Lotus roof. Bidding for this one ends on the 27th, or just a few days before the clocks go forward - what a British Summer Time it could be with this in the garage...

This, along with a Caterham, have been on the top of my list for a weekend car for as long as I remember…need to work harder.

Red isn’t for me on a lotus but that looks a great example otherwise. The bigger roof scoop which I missed out on my S2 Exige and the 2010MY rear spoiler. Sensible miles but not so little it’s been an underused garage queen.

Very nice if the colour is your bag.

I'd be very happy with this in my garage for sure. smokin

I'd just change the wheels to silver though I think.

Red looks fabulous to me and works really well with black rims. Will be following this one at auction with interest smile

Looks just like my old one, that car was so close to perfection it's unreal. How can a car steer so well? Loved the manic engine too and the contrary to popular belief the gearbox was a delight to use.

I urge anyone who loves driving to give one a go.

Still miss my old Exige S. The handling, once properly set up, was sublime.

It’s a bitsa car. Added the roof scoop from a later car and that spoiler was a 2010 facelift model onwards one. I’m also not sure that the front grill lights were an option on these, might be wrong though.
I mean there’s nothing wrong with any of that but if you’re going the full hog for the Performance Pack look. Why not add the front AP racing calipers and belled discs that the PP brought to it. Especially as it’s been modded for more power.

For me the 4 cylinder Exige is too close to the Elise.

The Exige just has to have the supercharged V6 that gives it that genuine sense of occasion and fantastic pace. And that noise... biggrin

I don't disagree with you but then how many "standard" cars are out there these days? When prices were buttons for Elises/Exiges, everyone seemed to be modifying their cars to their tastes (Honda/Audi S1 Exige anyone?!) whereas now originality is something revered in the resale value.

As for the brakes, I was offered my S2 with 4 pots and actually brokered a deal to remove them and reflect it in the price. Admittedly mine was only circa 260bhp but never felt underbraked with the standard brakes with the right discs and pads. Perhaps that was more a reflection of me not being able to get the most out of the car!

I love these and very nearly bought one (twice). Very very special things.
Only thing was being sat next to a truck during a test drive and thinking if I ever got hit by something there would be little chance of getting out.

This looks nice I have just sold my Exige 410. Said I didn’t want another Lotus but… wonder what it goes for

Whilst modifications never return(anywhere near) their cost in terms of residuals, I don't think unmodified Elise variants really command a premium either, at least not unless they're perfect ultra-low-mileage garage queens. You don't have to spend much time poking around an Elise to realise they were very much built on a shoe-string and as such, are not particularly hard to improve.

Not my favourite colour but I wouldn't let that stop me buying if I was in the market for one.
This looks amazing, has more than enough power, and would be an absolute driving dream.

I have an S2, tried the V6 when it came out. Not in the same street. Heavier, powered by a lazy saloon engine. Loses the finer touch. If you want a pure Lotus reflecting Julian’ s original concept it has to be 4 cylinders. V6 is just lazy.

I have a 2007 S2 exige and have owned it for about 15 years. Prior to this I had a 1972 elan big valve TC with a Nick Stagg engine. I have tried many so called sports cars and found nothing that compares to these cars. Ferrari or Porsche feel disconnected in comparison. A true Lotus should not need power steering or mega horsepower. If you enjoy real driving as opposed to drag racing there’s nothing to touch them . Colin Chapman’s principles are talked about and actually reflect a more sustainable approach. However, the younger generation like their comfort too much so how to introduce them to a pure sports car?
