Windscreen cost? - when you have been stupid

I'm after some advice on roughly how much my windscreen will cost having to go direct and not through insurance?
Got a new policy on my 335d x drive recently, and in my haste to get in and drive it, I didn't realise that you had to add windscreen cover as an extra, i've never had a policy in the past that it wasn't included!!
Driving behind a HS2 lorry today that threw up a brick straight into the windscreen, weirdly no cracks showed, bounced down a few potholes caused by the lorries, got to work and parked up. Left a few hours later, jumped in car and there's a few cracks across the drivers side, which i think are slowly creeping as i drive.
I have requested a quote from Autoglass, but they are calling me back tomorrow, just wondered if anyone had had one replaced recently and approx cost.
I'm beginning to think car cursed, hit a pothole a few months ago (a month after buying it) split a rim, decided not to get it fixed, and bought a smaller set of wheels and tyres around 2k, took ages to get fitted, in the meantime using old car on temp insurance.
Also a nasty costly reminder for me to check policy details!

I've just gone through this exact thing, got a stone chip right in my line of vision and for some reason I didn't have cover on my insurance policy. Autoglass wanted just under £1k, so I called around all the local places and got one for £310. This was for a 2021 VW Passat.

Unless you have any fancy sensors like camera for traffic signs etc (light/rain sensors shouldn’t need specialist equipment to transfer/calibrate) I would get a price from a well regarded local outfit. You might be surprised how little it is- I think I paid 220 for a nordglass screen for my old MK7 Golf.

I've never come across a policy which excludes windscreen replacement entirely. The excess free repair does seem to be less common than it was, presumably because it actually costs quite a bit for someone from Autoglass to come out to you in a van to fill a chip with resin.So, £1000 I would claim. £300-400 I would pay it myself.
If it is only covered with a massive excess, probably best to just pay for the replacement. If the windscreen is full of cameras, sensors etc which need recalibration, it's worth checking what a main dealer would charge. If the windscreen repair people need to take your car to the dealer to get that bit done and pay someone to sit around while that happens, it could be cheaper to take the car to the dealer directly where that won't need to happen.

I had just never in 30 years had a policy which doesn't include windscreen cover, so i had done all my checks for NCB, legal etc, but didn't even think to check that!!
I have 3 separate policies, (camper, M3, and this) and checked all the others, and all include windscreen.
I am a little pissed at the HS2 trucks, usually i just have to dodge the odd Macdonald's rubbish being chucked out, or energy drink can, but lately I'm having to dodge all the craters they are creating at the sides of the roads, and the associated tarmac and rubble that gets kicked up by them. However, that's another whinge.

All depends on the sensors in the current screen. Also make sure you ask for an OEM screen.
Will look into it tomorrow, think it's just the usual, it has lane assist and all that, front impact sensors, but presume they are in the bumpers.Rain sensors, auto lighting, all general stuff otherwise I think

Buy an OEM windscreen that way you avoid having to get the ADAS systems recalibrated.
Hire 2 experienced fitters to fit it (takes them about 10 mins to remove 10 mins to put the new one in then they wait another 10-15 min or so to ensure its bonding properly & watertight.
Cost you approx £350-400 for the 2 fitters.
Windscreen just shop around make sure its the OEM part though not the cheap made in china clone Autoglass will try to use! Big clue is in the price difference....

BMW wanted £1005 for a climate control windscreen on my e90 in 2017. About a third of that was the actual part.
Insurer wound up paying all but £75 of it but they did quibble on the spec until I showed them the car build sheet with the optional windscreen upgrade (it's polarised).
Short of me ticking that option when speccing the car it would have been a pattern part supplied by them.
Their installer was a prick from the well known glass auto company who did a poor job locating the screen in relation to the light sensor, rain sensor and visible vin cutout.

Always source the part trade get decent fitters to do it never trust the insurer few want to replace like for like with an OEM windscreen its too expensive for them!
Avoid Autoglass unless you hate your vehicle...they also want (to thrash it presumably!) it for an additional 2-3 hours to recalibrate the ADAS sensors...something that's not rquired with an OEM like for like replacement!
