MG confirms Cyberster GTS for production

Hard-top Cybster concept seen at FoS last year was begging for a green light; now we have it

Amid a flurry of new cars shown at Shanghai, MG has confirmed one more for its ranks. Speaking at the show, Jozef Kaban, design head for MG’s parent company SAIC, has confirmed that a coupe version of the Cyberster is coming. Apparently the positive response to the GTS concept seen at Festival of Speed last year “made it happen”.

It would make sense for a fully fledged hardtop to emerge this year, given the MG B GT will celebrate 60 years in October. And with the initial hype of the Cybster having faded just a tad, there would surely be some enthusiasm to have the spotlight shone on its halo model again. Given the pace of EV development, a coupe may well arrive as part of a wider Cyberster range facelift. Kaban was speaking at the Shanghai reveal of the next car in the Cyber series, the X SUV, has debuted at the Shanghai show. Exact details on the SUV are a little thin on the ground for the moment - and the concept has been shown without an interior - though it’s still a pretty serious statement of intent. Because it doesn’t look anything like MG has ever made, Cyberster included

Hard to think that the company which makes cars like the 3 and ZS has also produced this. But then this has been specifically designed with younger buyers in mind, hence the matt black, big wheels and light bar. What such squareness might do for efficiency isn’t exactly clear yet. It might not look like a Cyberster, but it seems the Cyber X is cut from the same cloth when it comes to making an impact - there are even pop-up lights. You're going to look the first time one of these comes the other way, that’s for sure.

It’s been suggested that the Cyber X will be built on SAIC’s (the owner of MG) new E3 EV architecture, which features something called ‘cell-to-body’ technology, that should boost both interior space and ground clearance. Handy for a family-focused SUV that will rival cars like the Skoda Elroq. If indeed the Cyber X comes here; there’s no confirmation yet of UK sales, though given the substantial popularity of the genre and the growing presence of MG over here there must be a case to be made. And it’s different, if nothing else - we’re definitely keen on that sort of thing. More on the Cyber X as we have it.

I saw the drop top for first time at brooklands easter meet on sat, with the MG owners club, Felt like you could have fitted two MG-Fs inside it..! But looked good, and this looks even better (naff rear lights though)

Quite like that. looks clean and modern without too many gimmicks. I wonder which we will get to buy first this or the electric Cayman? Bit of nod to Porsche there using the GTS badge that they like to use. The electric Boxster & Cayman are starting to look late to the party now.

I am surprised that the GTS badge isn't trade marked to somebody somewhere.

I think that looks pretty decent. Also in a class of its own at the moment, can't think of any other EV Sports GTs.

Overall I think that's a good looking car. The colour really suits it too.

The coupe versions of various Dodge Vipers were called GTS.

My dad had a Renault 21 GTS in the 1990s, not quite a Porsche or Viper.

I've always liked the Roadster version of this, so it is good to see them doing the Coupe as well I think. I know that EVs aren't exactly my thing, but I do find myself showing a bit of interest in these though for sure.

VW used it on the Scirocco, too. It's far too generic to trademark.

Oh yes.... I see now. I remmber those from childhood days! There is a yellow roadster on Piccadilly and I went in.... looks good. New HS is rather nice too.

The back would look far better if they just got rid of the arrow bits and integrated all of the lighting into the narrow strip.

Otherwise it's an undeniably pretty car.

I think Enzo may agree to disagree. By a few years.

I checked out the Roadster when one appeared in my local MG dealer.

I quite liked it. However, in the end, the 'Lambo' doors put paid to any further interest.

This new model looks good. Now, if the doors are 'normal'...........scratchchin

It has a lot of F-Type clues going on which certainly does it no harm at all.
As previously posted, if it has normal doors and thus, potentially a lower price point, I think it could do ok.
I've not seen a single Cyberster on the road and I wonder if it's because it's designed to appeal to flamboyant buyers, who by their very nature, can't see past the MG badge.

As above, this and the drop top look fantastic in a lexus LC kinda way, but no one is going to pay the money they're asking for, even a lotus badge would be a tough sell for £60k

If it were £30k for the entry level and sub £40k for the top spec, I might have seen one on the road.

Chap in my village has a Cyberster, which replaced a Boxster. It looks very smart and he says he has no regrets and the straight line performance is ‘ballistic’. Obviously it’ll be a very different driving experience to lighter mid-engined stuff, but he’s had some fairly exotic metal over the years, a McLaren 570C amongst them, so has some good reference points.
