Maserati Levante GTS | Spotted

Maybe the 530hp V8 Levante wasn't the world's greatest SUV - but it's now less than half price

We all know how powerful and persuasive a great engine can be when it comes to buying a car. It’s all too easy to overlook flaws and quirks for the sake of a powertrain that’ll put a smile on your face every single day. Even when new, many an average automobile has been saved by a wonderful engine of some kind. As a used purchase, with thousands off that new price but still very much in possession of a USP-worthy lump, the appeal only increases.

In modern times, it’s Maserati that’s become best known for superb engines in cars that aren’t nearly as good. When both come together the brand has proven it can take on anyone - see the spectacular MC20 - but in more than a few cases the reason for buying has been squarely under the bonnet. Consider the Trofeo lineup, where the F154 turbocharged V8 - with Ferrari heritage, yes - was boosted to 580hp and plonked in the Quattroporte, Ghibli and Levante. When the cars in question were already a good few years old. Not very many sold thanks to some extraordinary prices, but nobody would forget a dalliance with a Trofeo in a hurry.

Before the Trofeo, the Quattroporte and the Levante featured a GTS model, complete with the same 3.8-litre engine. It produced 50hp less than the Trofeo would, but was still the Ferrari-derived motor, and made for 180mph-plus Maserati flagships. Now they’re available for not very much at all, having once retailed at six-figure sums: a little more than £30k buys the 530hp QP, with this being the most affordable Levante at £45,000

The SUV is more expensive because it arrived years after the saloon, though the appeal is much the same. What was once more than £100,000 is now an awful lot less, and super rare. The Levante was actually a decent enough car once upon a time, it just wasn’t meaningfully better than the usual SUV suspects in any meaningful regard. So there wasn’t really a reason to buy one instead of an X5 or Cayenne, therefore not many folk did.

While the interior of this one really hasn’t aged well, as a 2020 car with just 30,000 miles it’s hardly been used at all. The red painted calipers and wheels look really smart, and when the colour catches the light it’s more interesting than the grey it seems on first appearance. You don’t want to fall into cliche when discussing temptingly affordable Italian cars, but there’s always something to be said for picking the less obvious choice.

As recently as five years ago, this would have cost £105,000 before options - now it’s for sale at £45k. That’s a recently reduced price as well, so there may well be further wiggle room possible. And there really isn’t much comparable; an F-Pace SVR at the same money will be higher mileage or older (having cost less money in the first place), an X5 M50i is similar money but lacks the flagship kudos, and a Mercedes GLC 63 is a smaller car. With less power. The larger, brawnier GLE still costs a lot more. Those cars have their advantages, too, and are probably better super SUVs overall, but as far as bang for your buck goes, the V8 Maserati feels hard to argue against. Told you a great engine could work wonders.

Phwoarrrr…that interior is errrr, budget spec to say the least. I don’t think these were ever helped by the fact the rear looks like the designers completely gave up on designing it.

Agree. Take away the Maserati badges and this really could be a Kia or Nissan

The really low profile tyres don't look right to me, out of proportion somehow.

Would have been better photographed with the suspension set to entry exit mode….

The 2021 looks better too, the grey tail lights make the back look less weird and the clocks and infotainment look a lot better.

These are really spec dependent, some just don’t work.

As with most Maserati's over the years - entered into market segments where there are a plethora of excellent models and bring along a 4/10 model to compete.

Agree and the state of the UK roads would make driving it fraught

Must be an Italian thing.

I've been looking at apartments in Milan and Florence and every single one has an interior style that's best described as electic.

I like that a nice v8 motor too ,running costs at Maserati dealer would worry me though.

Great engine, but not so great overall package. The looks have always confused me. Interior is definitely now dated, as others have said.

For a 2020 model with 30k miles, it is decent value. An equivalent RR SVR, GLE AMG, Cayenne Turbo, etc will most likely cost more.

Nearly two quid per mile in depreciation, or about 14 grand a year, even by the standards of the class thats rather spicy.

Can see why they didnt sell many, same price as the usual suspects but doesnt look as good as say a Cayenne, right about that interior, thats sub par for the class and the brand looking at the photos, even allowing for it may be a bit nicer in person.

I can see the appeal of a QP, but this doesnt look very Maserati being an SUV.

Out of interest, what is wrong with the interior?

It looks like it has all the bits you'd expect, and the leather looks nice with the red stitching. I'm not in the market for a premium SUV so don't know where it is lacking, but it looks OK to me but is getting a lot of hate.

I have a pre-facelift Levante Q4 - the diesel, that's been remapped to 330/550

That competes well with the non turbo petrol but then manages over 30mpg

It is black with the full tan interior and that really lifts the image over and above the normal black grimness.

Mine replaced my old X3. I was looking for another X3 and saw a Levante on the road. I was quite taken aback that the same age car was around the same price as the X3s.

I took a punt on the Levante. Really happy I did - It's a lovely place to sit and drives very well. It's not sporty though even though the subs in the exhaust emit a good V8 rumble ;-)

To date and nearly 2 years it's not had any issues and servicing at my local indie is about the same as the X3 was.

Agree. I think it looks much better inside than out. Must be a nice place to sit parked while adding up the running costs.. ..ouch !

It looks like something you'd find in a 2015 Chevrolet or something, specifically the dash (the seats are fine). Hard to put into words but it looks cheap.

Its not horrendous, but it doesn't look like a hundred plus grand car in there, have a look at a same year Cayenne and compare, I have a 2015 Jag XJ and that looks way nicer.

Chap in our village has one of these, in the same colour. It makes a fine noise indeed. Didn't realise the interior was so low rent though. The seats look ok, but the rest looks like it could have came from an MG or similar.

This one has extended leather, that’s not coming across in the photos, the interiors are decent, but those seats do look cheap in these photos.

The ones without extended leather are a bit naff at the price point, but only at the when new price point.
