Good, early MX-5s are becoming increasingly hard to find - PH classifieds to the rescue


The limited-edition, classic Mazda MX-5 can feel like as much of a part of the car’s appeal as a soft-top roof and rear-wheel drive. It’s hard to imagine the first generation in particular without an exclusive colour of some kind, a set of funky graphics, and an interior uplift. There were so many that it became hard to keep track of, from Berkeley to California and Merlot to Monaco. 

Nowadays, of course, things are a bit different, sports cars being less of a priority, and therefore special-edition MX-5s not emerging with anything like the old frequency. Even the current generation received the Recaro and the 30th Anniversary a few years back, but come 2024, the 35th Anniversary car was reserved for America - and the recently revised ND range doesn’t feature a special edition. Prime Line, Exclusive Line, or Homura are your choices - pity. Fortunately, the latest car is more than good enough to make you forget about how appealing yellow paint or bucket seats might be.

But if it must be a limited-run model, this is the MX-5 for you. Quite why there was a Mazda sports car commemorating the ‘tradition, prestige, and quality of the Glenagles Hotel and golf club’ isn’t exactly clear, but there were 400 of them made in the mid-'90s to help flog a few more MX-5s to customers in the UK. Based on the 1.8-litre model, all of them were identical: Montego Blue paint like an RX-7, Champagne leather and roof tonneau, four-spoke wheels, and something like wood trim for the interior. There was also a three-spoke steering wheel with the hotel crest in the centre and - get this - a tartan-bound owner’s folder. Special editions of the 1990s really were a different breed. 

This one still has that document wallet, plus all the equipment to mark out a Gleneagles from the rest of the range. Indeed, it even comes with the original, optional hard top, plus the Clarion radio it first left the factory with. We all know how hard it is to find good, NA MX-5s three decades on, let alone one of the special editions (despite their previous ubiquity), so this is a real turn-up. It’s the third owner of the Gleneagles that’s now selling it. The first had their Mazda just a year, but the second was much keener, keeping the car for a quarter of a century until 2022. It is said to have been ‘lovingly maintained’ and certainly looks lovely, the paint in particular. And the tartan, of course. 

Recent work has included springs, dampers, and brakes in 2022, a new exhaust last year, plus a service and MOT just this month. The latter showed no advisories, just like last year’s, so there really ought to be nothing to worry about for this summer apart from what CDs to take on your day out. The current keeper, an MX-5 Owners Club member, says the Gleneagles regularly draws admiring glances at shows - it’s easy to see why. 

Like a lot of the heroes of the '90s, MX-5s have appreciated over recent years as rust and neglect have claimed so many. This one is for sale at £9,000; all bar one of the others on PH is more expensive, for some idea of where the originals now sit. From the Shed spec sports to a bonafide classic, it’s been some journey for the little Mazda. This one turns 30 next year, in fact - only one place to take it for an anniversary road trip.

The usual stuff about having a good poke about underneath excepted this looks a nice example, as it looks like the fairly long list of stuff that caused MOT failures 3-4 years ago has been dealt with. The ‘wood’ centre console is hilarious. hehe I’m sure those are five spoke wheels rather than four though Matt!

As said, the wood isn't my cup of tea either in this one. But then I've never really liked wood in any car though really.

My Dad looked at one of these in a local Mazda dealership back in 1997, but he ended up buying a new 'Classic' run-out edition instead. Like this....

Brilliant little cars, and I probably added at least half of the 10K miles it had on the clock when it was sold three years later as he was complying with the 90 day tax free rule back then, so rarely at home to drive it. £9K seems steep, but I guess there's not many left and good limited edition ones like this are likely to be sought after. Wouldn't mind it in my garage though.

This does look absolutely stunning, wood and leather aside it's how I'd like my eunos to look, same colour but a lot tattier. Talking of special editions, I stumbled across an NB on car and classic, its a 10th anniversary edition that came with his and hers watches and a model of the car, and this one has all the associated special edition extras which is impressive.
Mazda definitely did some interesting specials.
Back to this one though and I think it looks gorgeous, montego blue is a stunning colour that looks either blue or green depending on the light, a lovely well sorted little car that.

Very lucky to have done 30k odd miles in one of these as my first car, back in the £1200 days. Lovely thing and on the whole was super reliable (absolutely stock). The parents still have it.

Having now owned some much more serious stuff, the little Mazda is just a joy to take out. On stock wheels / suspension it is perfect for crappy roads too.

That wood trim is absolutely bogging and it would distract me everytime I was in it. I deliberately went for the aluminium and black piano wood in my Jag XK for exactly that reason. I don't mind walnut trim in the right car, don't get me wrong. Shame, as it's a lovely wee car.

My son sold his Gleneagles mk1 a while back to fund our new Tuscan challenge project.

It was a really nice example, and I quite liked the interior.

He learnt a lot of stuff owning that car, working on it modifying it, track driving,

I suspect in a few years it’ll be one he regretted selling.

Were they all ‘sprayed with rustproof black tar’ to halfway up the doors? Or is that a really bad orange peel effect on the lower doors lol?

I really like this and it it was 2k cheaper i would be on my way to knutsford now

Would rather have the standard model that had better wheels and nicer interior. This looked naff back then and it still looks naff today.

Yes they are all like that. NA models anyway.

£9k seems a little rich with the miles. However no rust with these is key and it seems this one has none and it certainly looks like it’s been well looked after so who knows.

The first MX5 I ever drove was my mum’s friend’s Gleneagles special edition (and, yes, she genuinely was a retired hairdresser!).

Not only have I been an MX5 fan ever since, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Gleneagles.

£9k seems like a no-brainer.

Wow, I was not expecting to see quite so much wood in there - has more than Mercedes ML. Had not heard of this model but I like it wood ‘n’ all. That number plate is hilarious.

What a lovely looking car. Even after 30years the car can hold its own.

Think Mazda did really well with the special editions. As far as I recall they were all pretty standard from factory, but converted to limited editions after they’d been shipped over from Japan.

Just about to tax my Merlot for the summer season. It reminded me that appearances can be deceptive. Mine looks close to the condition of the advertised car, but I know there are some horrors on my sills that need a good strip back and repair which will cost a fair few thousand to be done properly.

If the car is as good as the pictures suggest, then I certainly think it justifies its price tag.

There are Mk1 MX5's that have rust, and there are Mk1 MX5's that have had the rust sorted.

I am not sure "no rust" NA's exist, certainly not those that have spent their life in the UK.

Great to see the values continue to increase though!

The one below has had rust issues looking at the MOT history and looking through the pictures it'll not be long before it breaks out somewhere else.
20k miles less miles and they want £12k for it WOW!
