Nissan UK restores gobsmacking Micra 350SR

Remember the one-off Micra with a mid-mounted V6? It's back in business

Back when car manufacturers could be more silly, Nissan and RML decided to have some fun with the Micra. A bit like Renault and TWR had done in the late '90s with the Clio V6, it was decided that the early 2000s K12 Micra would really benefit from rear-wheel drive and a big V6 in its middle. The resulting car, the Micra 350SR, was a mad little thing - and much loved as a result. It existed, officially, ‘to demonstrate the Micra platform’s adaptability and to celebrate the model’s little-known racing pedigree in Japanese motorsport’, but really it always felt like a ‘for the hell of it’ attitude prevailed.

Having been away from the limelight for many years now, the 350SR is back in business. The restoration work has been commissioned by Nissan to drum up some interest in the Micra ahead of an imminent EV version; the new light designs seen here are a nod to what’s coming for the supermini. The livery has been overhauled as well; what was once predominantly red is now liquid silver with blue accents. The wonderful Rays wheels from a 350Z have been retained, which is great news, though for some unfathomable reason the refurbishment has involved painting them black. Nothing’s perfect.

Speaking of the 350Z, the SR’s main appeal remains present and correct: it’s still powered by the 3.5-litre V6. It wasn’t a stock unit, either, benefiting from spicy NISMO cams, an ECU upgrade, and induction tweak for more than 300hp. In a Micra! The 350 will surely feel wilder than ever, 23 years after it was first made.

That anniversary is significant for Nissan, too. The number 23 is important because ‘2’ (ni) and 3 (‘san’) together in Japanese sound like Nissan, so that’s why it used to be seen so much on its factory racing cars. And why the rescue mission has happened now. Completing the 2025 makeover is Apple CarPlay, because no claim to restomodification is complete without it. Nissan suggests streaming music ‘when cruising or while parked, because the engine retains all of its aural extravagance.’ There really will be an opportunity to test that, too, as Nissan will let the 350SR out to the media just as it did 20 years ago. We’re battling our way to the front of that queue immediately.

Seems a strange way to promote EV.

Remember that awesomely fun thing we did a while ago with a big V6 engine?

We've given it a st paint scheme!

Now buy our tedious EV dross.

No, they’ll sell you a nice little Micra EV runabout though biggrin

I think the most you can hope for would be a Micra version of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E… that would be the natural electric successor to this car!

Agreed, I’m not anti black wheels, but silver on the right car just works so well, especially in a nice design.

Glad it still exists but the original livery was definitely miles better...however it doesn't fit with Nissan's current corporate image, which if it's going to be used as a promotional tool for EV's (...eh?) meant unfortunately it needs a new suit.

I've really fond memories with both of my 160SR's, and one is still around with circa 140k on the clock.

As a swansong to hydrocarbons, RenaultSport really should bring out a twin turbo V6 Megane, why...just because & the kudos would be huge.
Prefer the original livery but good it has been restored. Not quite as mad as the gt-r Duke.

True, but it does look very high in comparison. Perhaps the angle is unflattering.

Great memories of when manufacturers did stuff like this just because they could. I remember seeing this and the Juke R (with an R35 drivetrain!) at Goodwood FoS many moons ago. Could have spent days looking at all the details, they were really well done as show cars rather than engineering mules.

Not sure they’ll sell many electric city cars off the back of restoring this one though.

Not twin-turbo they did make a V6 Megane, which raced in the Eurocup Megane Trophy as a support series for Formula Renault 3.5. That used the same VQ35 engine as this Micra, but with 400 hp.

Remember very vividly being in the pits when they were doing some demo runs back then. The thing was deafeningly loud

Must have had a hard life doing that already, if it has needed restoration. What has Nissan been doing with it all these years?

It is a shame they have essentially wiped out a significantly important piece of Nissan history by restoring it.

I’m not so sure, the new Nissan CEO was strongly hinting at some new halo models in his results briefing earlier this week, helping to get a bit more personality and passion back into the brand. Maybe the GTR isn’t dead?
