I think the issue is calling up the day before. You are captive and entirely at their mercy. Fairly sure the key window, if possible, is between 3-4 weeks prior for best quotes.

Yes, that. I found out this buying my daughter her first car. Ran quotes before buying (£1400) putting a start date of 3 weeks later, went to see it, bought it...went to buy a policy to start immediately....lowest quote >£1900. If I waited 3 days to insure it, it came down to £1470.

So is it a mid policy change of car? If so, again your current insurer may have you over a barrel. I had similar, changed a car to an identical model albeit a year younger and the mid term price to change was £140 on a policy that was originally £190 for the year. Starting afresh, I was getting quotes of £205 however the cancellation fee plus what I'd paid plus dicking about etc... so I reluctantly paid it and vowed never to darken their door again after the policy expires in December.

I did the same (or similar) with my daughter. When she passed her test, I immediately got her insurance, but put the start date two weeks later. Sure, she couldn't drive for those two weeks which must have been frustrating, but it was over £400 cheaper.

Have you tried just running it through meerkat or confused?

I did a mid-term cancellation and new policy for a LR for collection that afternoon and it wasn't bad at all.

It all seems to be a complete lottery.

I recently played the tedious quote hunting game for my Porsche Cayman. When the guy on the pohone realised I had had a windscreen claim last year, it was a bit of a sucking through his teeth moment for him. (And me tbh).

Anyway, he inputted the £900 claim....

It reduced the premium by £40! Go figure.

Round figures:

My wife's renewal on her 1998 SLK230 - £150

My renewal on my 2012 C200 Estate - £450

Both fully comp, both S, D & P, both of us clean licences, no claims for decades, both in our 70s. Both cars worth buttons. Both policies with Saga.

I've just had similar with Adrian Flux. Did a quote through money supermarket and was quoted around £850, £650 through confused.com.. Tried AF as I've been insured through them before and they came back with £1,300.

Yes, all very similar. The reason I haven't contacted them is if they look into it, her premium will increase. I don't know. I'm too chicken to find out.

My guess, 1998 SLK230s overall cost them about a third in claims compared to 2012 C200 estates. All other factors being equal.

You're probably right - it's just arithmetic. My brother had a 1969 Cooper S in the 70s which was expensive to insure right up until the Cooper S was lumped in with the 1275GT. He was simultaneously pleased and insulted.
