SEAT Leon Cupra 290 | PH Private Area

A new Cupra Leon will be auto only and some shade of grey - how different things once were...

The Cupra configurator is a pretty sombre place right now. There are most certainly some good cars on there, including the Leon, Born and Tavascan, but man is the colour palette boring. Needless to say, the new Cupra has its target demographic and an image it wishes to convey; surely, though, the world doesn’t need any more grey cars.

And certainly one model line-up doesn’t need as much grey as the current Leon. Of the seven shades available, from NCO to £2,055 matt option, four are some kind of grey. Add those to a black, a white and Fjord Blue - which is as bright as might be expected given the name - and it’s a really drab choice of colours. While there will always be launch colours and those preferred hues used for marketing, it’s disappointing that those who want something more colourful are so limited in choice.

Wasn’t always this way, of course. And we aren’t just talking about yellow SEAT Cupras of yesteryear; while the previous Leon moved towards blacks and greys at the end of its life - think of the Cupra R, for example - there were some fun colours available during its life. Alor Blue, as this one is, was most definitely one of them. It’s vibrant, it’s interesting, and it really pops in the sun.

It’s the ideal colour, in fact, for fondly remembering the last Cupra. Back when hot hatches were far more numerous, it sometimes struggled for attention in a crowded marketplace, but in essence it was a more powerful, more affordable version of the best Golf GTI in yonks. Which is a pretty good start. Perhaps some of the edges were a tad rougher and the interior not quite so plush, but just a few years later seeing a sensibly sized screen flanked by buttons looks pretty fantastic. Same goes for the manual gearbox.

Indeed the old Leon was always a sharp look in all its guises, a tad more eye-catching than the Golf without trying too hard. As well as the paint, this one is helped in that regard by the 19-inch multispoke wheels, some lowering springs and a few bodykit bits from Maxton. Maybe not to all tastes - the joys of modifying - though you can bet a standard one will look a bit flat without them.

As well as those changes, this Cupra has an exhaust upgrade, so it should sound as good as it looks. Add that to recent brakes, suspension, and Michelin tyres, and there’s plenty in the SEAT’s favour beyond just the colour. These were always quite frisky front-wheel drive fun, perhaps a tad overpowered in truth, but in an increasingly staid fast car world there’s a lot to be said for that. For less, as always, than the equivalent Golf GTI as well. Here’s to standing out for all the right reasons.

Grotesque wheels, otherwise have always been a fan of the shape of these and have to agree about the sorry state of affairs regarding the Cupra configurator…a sea of depression

I had a 290 a few years ago, fantastic car. Had issues with the water tank cracking twice, but other than that, faultless for me. Definitely needs an exhaust upgrade but you have to be careful with what, drone at 70 is horrendous if not.

The only negative I see of it now is that it seems their value has dropped to allow a certain type of scrotum to afford them, and you see them driven as such.

Couldn't agree more. The current colour choice is dismal unlike this offering which is a stand out colour. V nice indeed.

The only observation is the seller should have had the engine bay detailed for the pictures as it looks a bit dusty under the bonnet.

Pistonheads often laments about the passing of this, or the loss of that, not as good as it used to be… etc…

But, respectfully, where have you really used the power, agency, advocacy and reach of this platform to do something about all the ‘loss’ PH..??

Maybe you do - but it does not get posted?? Idk…?

I’ve just handed back a 333ps Formentor. As pointless crossovers go it was quite a sharp looking thing but it was crying out for a brighter colour, I don’t understand Cupra’s obsession with keeping it somber. Why not give somebody the option at least?

hmm, interesting but I am wondering what exactly could Pistonheads do about the demise of the hot hatch in your view?

As for the car, I think that looks great, like the wheels and the stance, and my experience with the EA888 was it felt quicker than the numbers suggested. Agree with previous poster, if your gonna show the engine, a quick 20 min spruce up wouldn't have hurt

I had a Mark 1 Cupra R when first launched and loved it. Design was and still is great to my eyes. Sadly, subsequent incarnations have never quite matched the original frown

I could never quite get my head around the 280/ 290/ 300 options, it sounded like it should have been sequential, ie continuous upgrades, but it seems in 2016 you could have had a 290, as well as a 280, the 290 was still available in 2019, long after the 300 was out. Always a WTF for me!

I suppose like all groups, I am guessing the PH reach must be fairly long and wide - and like all lobby or interest groups ‘gathering’ that agency together can at least counter point, or help to give gravity to alternate approaches.

There is a lot of clever people, industry and non industry, on here, channelling that intellect would be the 1st step, and given the reach - looks like a good opportunity going up the river as time passes…

I'd have been much more inclined to buy one of these if they had come with 4 drive. SEAT only fitted AWD to some of the estate versions.

Huge fans of these as they are proper decent drivers cars that are really easy to live with.

Black interior doesn’t photograph well but in person it’s perfectly acceptable.

Great used buy just have a slightly touchy infotainment system and usual VW water pump issues.

Capable car. Unfortunately they lobbed loads out on cheap PCPs, so they quickly adopted the 'Barry' image.

Got a 2015 SC in that colour and similar specs, minus exhaust and springs but Maxton stuff and I do think it stands out.

I kinda feel silly not liking the colour originally but now its as mentioned one that stands out compared to more modern cars, its been good to me but will be time move on soon.

Even when SEAT offer metallic red, which is a £800 option on VW Golf’s, for free no one opts for it anyway - I hunted high & low for a red MK4 Leon estate FR Sport without success, in December & ended up settling for metallic black.

I've been obsessing over the 300 estate for a while now as a relatively understated all-rounder, they seem quite well regarded in all performance guises but whenever you see one advantage event they appear to have been vandalised by questionable modifications.

Fantastic cars I've a 17 plate 300 , Leon Cupra & Cupra Leon offer all most as much as the equivalent year Golf R for less.
After 4 Golfs admittedly all GT TDi & GTDs i wanted a change & think the Leon Cupra & Cupra Leon look better.

The latest Cupra Leon VZ 333 has just as much power as the latest Golf R & looks fantastic as a wagon.
I won't buy another Golf but will a Cupra either the Leon VZ 333 or another of the Cupra Leon 300.

My car has currently done just over 67,000 miles & in 3 years has been faultless.
