American cars beep on lock
Discussion
Most cars have it as an option, although historically it was often something you had to ask the dealer to turn on or off.
These days its probably buried in a menu somewhere.
Americans like it, we don't.
It can be useful for finding your car in a car park, but the cost is passive aggressive tuts and sighs from your neighbors

My 2003 3 series beeps and flashes the lights when you "lock" it.
It turns on the interior lights when you "unlock".
Both lock and unlock functionality can be configured if you have the right s/w and obd connection.
I like the visual and aural confirmation that the car is "locked" and the subtleness of the "unlock".

Back in the distant past, I had a car with a remote-control alarm that was hooked up to the central locking. It worked, by and large, per the modern system with buttons on the key, other than the fact that the remote control was a separate unit. Locking or unlocking the car made the alarm chirrup. I've never encountered such a thing elsewhere, and assumed it was an old fashioned idea.
Films do dub in all sorts of weird, wonderful and inappropriate sound effects where cars are concerned - see a typical scene of a modern car with radial tyres and ABS 'screeching' to a halt from 5 mph in a car park. It's also possible to witness movie motors hitting the redline at 20 mph and, if a manual gearbox is present, gaining magic powers to accelerate when dropping from top to third or fourth at any old speed.
I'd always assumed the central-locking noise was part of that, but perhaps it isn't!

Wife just been to florida and noted that all the cars over there beep when you lock them. I thought this was just in the movies and dubbed on. Apparently not. Also the fancy audi style indicators are not allowed there. What's with the chirp on locking the car, is it mandatory?
Sequential indicators? They are allowed there - the current fad was started by the “new” mustang which originated firmly in the US. I set all my cars to chirp on lock/unlock - I find an audible indicator easier to remember than a visual - some jobsworth in a car park once abruptly told me it was illegal in the UK for cars to do this, I’ve never had any issues with it though.
Best one I heard was a 2015 Mustang with keyless. If you left it running and took the keys with you it would give a few very short blasts on the horn to get your attention. I always thought the horn thing was because alarm sirens weren’t permitted either federally or in certain states.
It can be programmed on most post 2000 BMWs.
One of my current ones beeps on locking, a previous one beeped on unlocking and did a double-beep on locking but I wasn't so keen on that. But seeing as someone with Carly coded it as a favour at a local car meet I lived with it.
I like a beep as I don't always notice the indicators flash.
