Renault 5 GT Turbo Dimma | Spotted

MaxPowerHeads, assemble - there's royalty in our midst

Spend long enough in the PH classifieds (occupational hazard in this job) and, perhaps inevitably, fewer gems tend to emerge. There’s always lots of cool stuff for sale, if little you haven’t seen before. And everything is more expensive than it used to be. Proper surprises don’t come up all that often, which only makes them even more exciting when they do; enter the Renault 5 GT Turbo Dimma

Yep, we got one folks. A bigger '90s pinup than Carmen Electra, the Dimma’d Renault 5 was the dream machine for what’s now known as Gen X. Maybe the older millennials, too. Max Power lads, for want of a better phrase. In truth all of the Dimma machines were lusted after by car-crazy young people at the end of the 20th century; the UK offshoot of the Belgian company was established in 1986 by Terry Pankhurst, and soon had a reputation for making magnificent mini supercars of French hot hatches.

The 205 GTI was the big ticket conversion, especially Dimma’s four-wheel-drive, Cossie-powered one - because why leave Peugeot to have all the T16 fun? The 205s definitely seemed to be the most popular Dimma conversion, but the company also created kits for the 106, 206, 309, Renault Clio and even Fiat Uno. It’s very easy to lose a lot of time in the Dimma gallery

A GT Turbo had all the fun of forced induction in its favour as well, a suitably silly soundtrack to go alongside the wild looks. Well, we say that - by modern standards this really isn’t so outrageous, because a Renault 5 was a genuinely small, small car. Certainly the rear three-quarter remains the Dimma’s best angle, convincingly channeling some mid-engined 5 Turbo energy with the puffed-out arches, spoiler like a lean-to and rude dish to the 16-inch wheels. Many people added bodykits to the 5 GT Turbo back in the day, but nobody quite did it like Dimma.

This one is believed to be one of just two such 5s remaining; it could well be one of the cars in the Dimma gallery. Registered new in 1987, it was converted in July 1997 by the second owner - what a time to be alive. The advert says that ‘later additions such as clear indicators, revised grille and DTM style mirrors are also provided’; it really is as '90s as The Big Breakfast, and probably even more fun.

The Dimma is no mere time capsule, either; lots has been spent recently on restoring it, with a host of new or reconditioned parts as well as engine work. The 1.4-litre turbo came out of the car for that, and the engine bay tidied up in the process. In case the exterior pics didn’t do it for you, those from under the bonnet certainly will.   It’s a glorious little thing, a rare case of reality being better than you remembered. (Though that might just speak to the quality of the restoration.) From the NACA ducts to the exhaust and white-faced dials to the intact parcel shelf, you wouldn’t change a thing. You’d just take it and show it to every car person possible, all the time. Then ask for donations to look around the late 20th-century museum exhibit; after all, it costs more than £40k to buy - that’s got to be recouped somehow…

Just need some pics of it with 90’s slapper royalty Jo Guest and Lindsay Dawn McKenzie draped over it.

Diminutive power on this Dimma at 120hp. It looks the part though and probably especially more so in the day.

That looks fantastic, but dare I say it, almost a little restrained. Was it the Pug 205s that had outrageously fat haunches?

I wonder how much all that fibreglass weighs and how it dulls the performance?

I sort of got the 205 Dimma as it was realistically the only way to get the T16 look without going for one of the homologation specials. It was always the 306 MAXI rally car ones that did it for me though, still front wheel drive like the real deal with all the looks. Did anyone ever make a Megane style one?

I did like Dimma but preferred Ecosse

I remember when I was a teen in the mid90s and a convoy of Ecosse Peugeot show cars went past us on the M74 heading north

The one that really sticks out in my mind was a mint green 306 cab that looked amazing - I vaguely also recall a pink car (poss a 205)

Amazing.

I am Gen X and I had never heard of a Dimma R5;)

To be fair, I was more into classics in the 90s though.

This thing is not really to my taste, but it is v evocative of its time. So I like it more than I should.

I lived fairly locally to Ecosse so their cars were a fairly common sight around here... plus they were regulars at the usual events. Their green 306 sedan was peak Ecosse for me. Though a mate had a silver 306, lowered on 18" Antera 143 with an Esquiss Auto splitter and it looked fantastic back in 99 too. I was never sold on Dimma kits, more so the ones that looked like a bad homage to a Testarossa but their 306 Maxi kit was amazing, more so when not equipped with, small diameter, deep dish alloys... 306 Dimma on 18" Compomotives or similar looked incredible.

I had one new in 88

I'd have that back in a heartbeat, and much prefer it over this with the bodykit

Prima Racing did a Megane and Clio Maxi kit

Yep. Mate had one back in the day when he was 18! This old thread has some nice pics of a Pug restoration https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Not a fan of the kit, but the R5GTT (especially in Phase 2 guise) was a properly chunky-looking little hot hatch in its day. I'm surprised nobody's weighed-in with a "build quality like a paper bag" comment yet.

When I was working as an estate agent (yeah, sorry) in the late 80's / early 90's, there was a chap working for one of our less ethical competitors who had a Dimma-equipped 205 GTI. I remember him because he looked like the stereotypical yuppie: stripy shirt, slicked-back hair and baggy trousers with red braces. Oh, and a mobile phone the size of a shoebox.

I think the Dimma 205 looked better, this looks dumpy and as for £44k laugh

Would anyone really pay that much for it.

I was just never that enamoured by the 205 GTi. I test drove a 1.6 and failed to see the magic, just loud red carpets. Road tests said the 1.9 was jerky but it was outside my budget.

No, for me it was always the 5 GT Turbo. It was a better shape, bigger inside and had that purposeful, lowered stance. I spent my money on an upgrade to get it to 150bhp ( though in reality the fuel meant you had to dial it down so probably nearer 130). The Dimma kit looked good but all I could think of was yuppies and rust traps and added weight.

Never seen a Dimma GTT before- I love it!
Whereas that 205 with the fake vents to suggest rear/mid engine - ghastly. Just as well we don't all like the same thing.

I love a 90s bodykit, some something about the Dimma GTT just seems 'off' to me. The Dimma Peugeots look brilliant though! Prefer Skeete kit on a GTT

Great find. I forgot they did kits for cars other than the 205.

Saw the 205 Dimma at Oulton Park this weekend, that to me is how it should be done. The 5 looks almost too restrained. Bring on the arches![url]
