I was clearing out my car prior to it being traded in.

I came upon a 2016 AA atlas, which I still looked at occasionally. Good to have an overview sometimes.

I recall buying it at a petrol station but can’t remember seeing them recently. Do they still sell them anywhere? Apart from the obligatory Amazon of course.

I'm sure you can still get one at a lot of motorway services?

Ive seen them at WHSmiths or whatever they’re called these days

Has to be said, for route planning on a ‘road trip’ there’s nothing like a proper map, particularly the ones which have the nice ‘green’ roads marked.

Everyone had one in the 90s (and earlier), I had a A-Z Road Atlas. RAC did something similar, those books were expensive!

Travelling around as a field service guy in the 80/90s I had a few., as well as an extensive collection of city AtoZ’s.
Also piles of Michelin maps for Euro jaunts. Road layouts were simpler back then, fewer one ways etc, so rarely got lost or stuck.

I have always bought a new AA map for every car I have ever owned.
I rarely use it but its handy to have and they fit nicely in the pocket on the back of the drivers seat.

WH smith is my usual place to buy from.

The day a 13 year old hacker takes down the GPS network we are all fked

I have various atlases with motorways missing
The one my parents bought me after I passed my test has no M40 in it.

When my father in law passed we found some old AA typed route plans (a service offered for members) for various trips done across France
One day we will follow one in our camper, it will be interesting to see how it works out.

My Dad used those AA route plans though sadly they're all long gone but I remember sitting next to him in the family Austin A40 on day long drives (he never exceeded 45mph) from Middlesex to Lincolnshire feeding him directions.

Some of my map collection date back to the 1920s including a beautifully drawn ribbon map of the Great North Road, all of which I have driven. I reckon I could get you to anywhere in the UK with the aid of a road atlas and a packet of Werther's.
