Hi everyone
A little bit about me …
I am 64 years old, been driving for over 40 years and luckily I have never had to claim on my insurance and passed my car driving test in a car with manual gears.
I have had several operations since a child
Including 2 hip replacements all on my left hip.
Now for the past 15 years I have been driving automatic cars only as cos of lack of movement in my left hip I started having to lift my leg onto the clutch whenever I used the clutch.
Questions are …
should I inform dvla about this ?
Should I downgrade my licence to automatic only ?
Would I have to retake my test again in an automatic car ?
Thanks for any reply’s in advance

I don't think there's any reason to change your licence. No-one is going to force you to drive a manual car just because you have a licence to do so!

Why can't you just drive an automatic? I don't get what the questions are all about. Just don't drive a manual, problem solved.

I believe DVLA notification is for things like epilepsy and suchlike where you arguably need to stop driving.

My mother, in her '70s, is technically allowed to drive a 7.5T truck due to licence age. Doesn't mean she ever has, nor frankly that she should. Licence categories are irrelevant. Should I get the road roller category removed because I'm not going to drive one?

Why would you even consider this?? Your current licence let's you drive manual AND Automatic cars, there is no need/reason to change your licence.

You don’t need to do anything, just because you choose to drive an auto doesn’t mean you have to tell anyone.

According to the OP, you must, because it's on your licence! :P

If you're really concerned you can check on-line with the DVLA but as others have written, switching from manual to automatic shouldn't require you to do so.

Bugger..just checked my licence categories. Totally good to go with an agricultural tractor, but the all important 'G' category for Road Roller isn't there! curse

Except your insurance company, but that is just because of a change of car.

My mate has got every single licence category you can get, he’s done every test - even tanks! He had a bit of trouble with the roadroller test though, there are very few places in the entire UK that do it (possibly just one)

I passed my test in a manual car SIXTY years ago, still have the same type of licence.
All our cars are automatics and have been for years.
The only time I drive a manual car is when I hire one on holiday, and that’s not very often.

Go easy chaps - the guy is just asking a question! No need to jump on him or ridicule him. Not everyone ‘just knows’ this kind of stuff.

I thought they automatically removed that entitlement at 70 and downgraded you to 3.5tn max.

I don't know if it's actually possible to 'downgrade' a licence by adding an automatic-only endorsement. The transmission-permission aspect is based on the vehicle in which one passed one's test. In the OP's case that was a manual car. Nothing, now, could or would change that as it's an historical fact.

Of course, one can upgrade a licence, but that's another matter.

Separately, I don't think there's any conceivable practical or legal benefit of having an auto-only licence.

Grandfather's rights allow me to drive a 7.5 tonne truck with my car licence gained in 1982.

But looking at the little pictograms on the back and there's a minibus with a trailer and a truck with a trailer, so now I must try those smile

Bit daft that I can't just jump into a HGV artic though biggrin

Correct. I`m 78 next month, never down graded or asked for anything, just renewed my licence when necessary.
On the back it says. B1 Light 4 wheeled vehicles. ( vans up to 3.5 ton ) B standard cars . BE cars with trailers.
It also says AM mopeds and A motorcycles. which is crazy.

You'll have provisional licence for mopeds and motorcycles most probably, if you check the codes?

You can take your HGV medical and get it back....for a year, until.you need to do it again. It's not gone forever.
