VW Golf GTI Pirelli Edition | Spotted

The prospect of a five-pot Golf GTI has resurfaced - what better time to revisit VW's knack for special editions?

It’s silly season at the Nurburgring right now. Every day new spy pics appear in the PH inbox showing this or that undergoing the final stages of development, from electric M3s to really racy 911s. While the rest of the world is on holiday, development drivers and engineers are making the most of the good weather on industry pool days. There’s some good stuff coming, that’s for sure.

A lightly fettled Golf GTI was a constituent of the pile, sharing track time with the new Audi RS3 GT. The GTI 350 was its rumoured name, so it was only natural to assume that the existing 2.0-litre engine would be used, given it’s already at 333hp in an R. But now the internet is suggesting that the special anniversary edition might finally get to share the 2.5-litre inline-five that makes its sibling so exciting. Cupra has been here before, of course, but the prospect of a run-out Golf with 400hp is obviously more invigorating than a Formentor that was never officially sold in the UK.

Whatever engine it gets, we can be sure that the combustion GTI will not bow out without a special edition model; they’ve become as much a part of the hot Golf story as tartan seats and dimpled gearknobs over the past half a century. The 50 is the most recently announced one, of course, and over the years we've had everything from Clubsport S to TCR and G60 to Driver’s Edition (in the US). Plus, perhaps most famously of all, the Pirelli Edition. Technically speaking, the 1983 run-out model for the first Golf GTI was called the Campaign over here - Pirelli was the name used in Germany. But it had those brilliant P-slot wheels, and the name kind of stuck. So much so, in fact, that 25 years after the first Pirelli, VW made another - this is one of them

In 2008, a Mk5 Golf GTI Pirelli Edition was marked out by another 30hp (so 230 in total, as per the Edition 30), unique wheels, yellow contrast stitching (on tyre treaded seats), a different bodykit and smoked light lenses. There was a Pirelli badge on the boot and, of course, a set of P Zeros from the factory. Yellow wasn’t mandatory, but it was certainly the best colour to plump for to make the special status obvious.

This five-door DSG looks absolutely glorious, wearing its 100,000 miles like a car that’s done half that. The yellow remains radiant, the special wheels are unmarked, and the seats still look pretty great. This is said to benefit from a recent cambelt and water pump replacement, which won’t have been a small job, plus a four-figure paint correction. So someone has been willing to spend the money on upkeep, which is encouraging.

In fact, it would seem that all three previous keepers of this Pirelli have been diligent souls, as there’s never been an MOT advisory for this Golf in its entire life. While the records only go back to 2016 and 46,000 miles, to go without a blemish for nearly a decade and 50,000 miles is impressive. It wouldn’t be a surprise to find a matching set of P Zeros still. While the asking price of £15k is top dollar for a Mk5 GTI (it’s more than any R32 of the era on PH right now, in fact), you’ll surely do well to find another Pirelli this nice. And we all know how collectable limited edition GTIs are. Just imagine the frenzy if a five-cylinder one really does happen…

Price is wrong in the bottom section of the article. Seems like a Freudian slip showing how much you really thing it's worth!

I am confused - that's clearly a Golf R from the ring spy shots to mark 25 years but you are mentioning a GTI special edition?

I think they have dusted off the R400 plans they had before they got caught cheating om emissions.

Yes this is a confusing article, as the rumoured car is a Mk8.5 Golf R with the 5 cylinder RS3 engine - and definitely not a GTI

Quite. Autocar ran an article earlier saying its a 25th anniversary of the R badge, and will use the 2.5 engine, which makes far more sense. If it was going to be a GTI, it would be FWD, which seems an impossibility given the five-pot is always used in AWD applications.

As for the Pirelli, I like the colour, but the wheels don't really suit it. It would look smart on Ed.30 rims.

Bloody hell. I thought 8k was a bit rich for a hatchback on 100k miles but wow… you’d have to be certifiable.

The wheels and extra bodywork work look crap and the colour does it zero favours.

You have to pay extra for that front overhang.

That does very little for me I have to say. I do like yellow as a rule, but it looks cheap on the golf, the wheels look like some Wolfrace after market cheap ones and it is an auto....nothing at all redeeming about it at all....

Mrs Banana and I are about to go through a round of car changing. She insists on one being a 7 seater, which I don't believe we need so that will be "her car". As a compromise I've been allowed to start looking at hot hatches as a second car.

A Golf GTI is high on the list. Although I'd prefer something a bit newer, when this popped up I got a little interested. I like a yellow car and (unlike most willy-wavers on PH) would be happy with a 5 door.

What puts me off this (apart from the ERNIE-generated random number price tag) is that it's an auto. I know I'm old fashioned, but for all its efficiency I still don't want an auto box on a hot hatch, at least while I'm fortunate enough to be able to use both of my legs.

Side window deflector things are an odd accessory: makes me wonder if it's a Japanese import as they were popular there.

I am the same, maybe I am old too, but on my fun car, I don't want an auto box, even if it is quicker to change gears than me. An auto for my daily would be perfectly fine of course, but I want the involvement in a sporty car, particularly a hot hatch.

It's funny how the yellow doesn't work on this car for me though, as I had a VW Lupo in the same colour many moons ago, and that worked well on that car.

No side window deflectors are very popular over here now as well on hot hatches. They can adorn st boxes with chameleon windscreens but can also look ok

I would recommend an Edition 30 to you with a remap

Thanks for the above. Ed 30 probably a bit older than I need - looking at Mk7s at the moment.

I do, and it was based on long-term ownership of a yellow car.
