Private Reg help
Discussion
Good Morning All,
I have a private reg on my company vehicle.
My new vehicle is arriving this week so I need to remove my reg from my current vehicle.
I am not going to be assigning it to my new vehicle, so the retention cert will go in the companies name (not my company) how do I get this back into my name?
I feel like I know the answer but my brain is refusing to process anything this morning.

Once you have the V778 form (retention cert) you can make yourself the nominee using that form. Then transfer the plate to the vehicle you own privately.
Edit: sorry, just re-read that you don’t want to put on the vehicle. Unless something has changed, I don’t think you can actually change the grantee / owner of the plate unless it’s put on a vehicle.
Someone better informed will be along quickly with the correct answer I’m sure!

What address is on the V5? As is where the retention document will be sent to (AIUI).
It sounds like you need to speak to your HR / car admin people at work (in writing) so they can write you in as nominee when they get the certificate.
You then ideally need to get the certificate off them and assign it to a vehicle you own (and take it off again if you want to) so you can then get your name and address on the retention document.

When you apply to remove the registration from the vehicle the V778 will be issued in the name of the registered keeper (the company). The only way to get it in your name is to assign it to a vehicle of which you are the registered keeper and then when the new V5C arrives for your personal vehicle, remove the plate for £80 and it will come back with ANOTHER V778 but this time in your name. You will also get a second V5C for your personal car. Your personal car will also get its old reg back (99.9% of the time).

I hear you but just so I know does that mean putting himself on as nominee won’t achieve anything ?ACTUALLY (in response to myself!):
I am pretty sure, when you apply to remove the plate online you will be given a code immediately to be able to assign the plate to another vehicle. So basically apply online and assign it to another vehicle there and then. Obviously inform work so that they know they may receive a void V778.

So
The transport women said she will give me the retention doc when it comes.
I don't have another vehicle to transfer it onto in my name if that makes sense.
I just want to retain the plate.
V5 is in the companies name.
Well, as long as you have the paperwork, that should be okay - as long as someone nefarious does not request a replacement! The transport women said she will give me the retention doc when it comes.

You could use a trusted relative's vehicle? Or buy a cheap scooter (with MOT)?

You can retain the plate in the companies name for 10 years. When you need to renew the certificate it will be posted to the company again I guess...?
Fair point - except if the OP transfers it to a car within that time , presumably all is good and he is able to ?

If you are added as a nominee, the plate still doesn t belong to you as such. So it s virtually pointless as far as I can see. I am not really sure why the nominee section actually exists. I have transferred 5 plates recently to my vehicles and not been a nominee on a single one.
Again fair point - very fair. Normally would agree except in this case would appear to suit the OP as a solution.
I’ve got a number on retention and on all but one my wife is named as nominee but I guess that’s a slightly different scenario.

Oh I totally agree. If I were the OP I would just keep the certificate in the company s name and worry about putting it into my name within the next 10 years if he trusts the company. Nothing will happen to it as nobody at the company will have the document reference number anyway. If it s worth thousands of pounds though I d transfer it away from the company, even if it s to a relative s car or similar.
The plate is quite an expensive one. To be honest the company wouldn't do anything like that even if I left them or vice versa.
I have a Focus RS as well and a couple of other cars but they all have plates on them, I may buy a C63 or M3 or something in a few weeks and just get it onto that to move it into my name tho.
The only thing I will add to this thread is that I once purchased a plate from a major broker and nobody was listed as the Grantee or Nominee, which was really weird. I have no idea how they did this though. The document just said ‘Not Applicable’ wherever a name should have normally been.
