Motorcycle carrier (how to calculate if safe)
Discussion
Hi all,
I am considering a Mercedes sprinter 417 (4.5 tonne gross) to convert to a camper van and add a chassis mounted rear motorcycle carrier to carry my 220kg z900rs
Are the only considerations when making sure a load is safe on a rear carrier:
rear axel weight
carrier max allowable load ?
I assume the strength of the chassis also comes into it but how do you measure this to make sure it’s within limits?
And obviously there is a lever moment applied which would add more weight to the rear axel than just carrier+motorcycle, but this can all be calculated.
Just trying to figure out what vehicle I will need to carry a 220kg motorcycle safely. Or if this is even possible.
Would a class 4 hitch mounted carrier be better than chassis mounted? (I don’t want to tow a trailer)
Thanks
Tom
