Encor reveals 'remastered' Lotus Esprit S1

It's exactly half a century since the world first saw a Lotus Esprit - now it's making a V8-powered comeback

Just when it seemed like every sports car on the planet, from MX-5 to Diablo, had enjoyed its restomod time in the sun, so there’s a newcomer in our midst. This, or at least the car hiding in the pics somewhere, is the Encor Series 1, otherwise known as a reimagination of the original Lotus Esprit. Today marks exactly 50 years since the wraps were taken off at Paris, so no better time to reveal a 50-unit remastered take.

Interestingly, Encor will build the Series 1 from the later Esprit V8 fundamentals, albeit with even more power from the twin-turbo 3.5-litre as well as ‘improved drivability and greater everyday usability’. Let’s hope the gearbox, always an Achilles heel of the Esprit, can benefit from some improvement as well.  While there’s no word yet on what will change for the suspension, brakes and tyres to make an Esprit V8 into an Encor Series 1, they are committed to a new carbon body in place of the fibreglass original, which, of course, will be to the benefit of kerbweight and rigidity. The original pop-up lights are redone as LED projectors.

The interior will be overhauled in the usual restomod fashion: keep occupants cool, comfortable and entertained, basically. So the Series 1 will have CarPlay, climate control that actually works and lots of lovely materials. Perhaps even some tartan, too, if you’re lucky. Encor suggests it’ll be a ‘space that balances timeless form with contemporary comfort.’

All sounds pretty good for now, especially with some former Lotus people in the Encor team. Daniel Durrant was lead designer on the Emira, so is well qualified to evolve the Esprit; Simon Lane was head of the Advanced Performance subdivision for a period as well. The latter said: “Our mission is to elevate the Esprit for a new era without sacrificing its soul.” Full details and pics will be coming next month, but there is a price already: it's £430,000, excluding donor vehicle. Best get hunting an Esprit V8. Obviously, we have you covered there...

Well I'm watching this with interest as I do love a wedge.

Let's just gloss over the price.

Imagine if instead of the Evora there had been a new esprit shame the concept never came to fruition

Price seems par for the course for a "restomod" so I'm not sure what people were expecting it to cost?

Which is not to say I think it's in any way worth the money, I'm thoroughly bemused by all of these restomods.

I have an S1 Esprit in my lottery win garage for a project car.
Some smoothing of the panels/joins, a reupholstery job, some Exige mechanicals... £150K.

Wish the project all the best, but for those reasons, I'm out.

That looks tempting and quite considerably less than it's reengineered/reimagined sibling

You're going to fit a transverse engine into an Esprit? That'd be... interesting!

Yes, I think a huge shame the shape died with the V8, then the Elise had to hold fort until Emira came along, which should have been made to look like Esprit evolution instead of something completely new.

IMHO the McLaren MP4/12C represents the 'modern Esprit.

It's very Lotus in it's engineering and concept and if I remember correctly used a number of ex-Lotus people.

Oh, I'll take one in White (007), no Black (JPS style), no Yellow, so it stands out in my car collection, umm just the matter of how much can I get for my 1st born and 2nd born....

Bet it will fly with the lighter body and modern day improved engine, probably more reliable than an original too..

I think if I was going to spend this much on Lotus I'd rather have a perfectly restored example of every genration as they left the factory.

This is a brilliant candidate for this OEM+ treatment.

I think at this point that sort of money probably buys you the company....

I can’t afford one, but if I could I’d have this over that new Ferrari tossterrossa any day.

Always loved the look of the Esprit in its various iterations, remember the last of them with the admittedly questionable rear lights (in my opinion) but still liking the overall shape.

This is just another resto-mod, which is cool but its not for the "normal" person, it's for the Singer market of those who have a decent amount of cash to splash and want a tailored version of a car they love or had aspired to own. Or they maybe own one and want the ultimate version of it, in their eyes. I get the idea and do appreciate what goes into them in terms of bespoke-ness and actual engineering, if done well.

The price, well, it's definitely a figure. But think about it, the Esprit was competing with the bottom/mid-rung Ferraris (308 to the 430, which is crazy to think about) and 911s and was always the cheaper alternative. Put it up against those rivals now on price alone and a bespoke version doesn't seem that bad value though I don't feel like putting something so niche against a (vaguely) mass produced Ferrari like the 296 is a fair comparison.

As the article mentions, lets see what they do with it and also that gearbox. Memory seems to tell me it was from a Renault 25 for packaging reasons so I'd imagine they'd be hard to come by now(!)
