im about to sell a car. it has had 3 plates on it, the original from dealer, a private one then another private one.

I wish to retain my last private one for a new vehicle so today took it off the car via the online tool and paid the fee.

However the previous private plate has been put on, not the original dealer assigned numberplate.

will i have to do the process again and pay the fee again once i get my new v5c to put the very first non private plate on? or can i contact DVLA

thanks

So is the previous private plate one you've had on retention?
If not, what did you do with it when it was taken off the car?
Was it a cheapie that you thought you'd "thrown away" when you fitted the most recent private plate?

i didn't think id put the middle plate on retention - it was indeed a chuck away one, well i thought so anyway...

Sounds to me as though the easy route through this would be stick it on retention and then throw it away. With a bit of luck the car will then revert to the dealer original. As you suggested, looks like another £80 fee.

You'd probably be able to sell the middle "private" one on for the £80 anyway.

Would the middle plate be a saleable proposition perhaps, if you don't want it?
